Guest guest
I think that " Autism Speaks " needs to consider using a different name. They do not " speak " for my autistic son ,nor do they represent the " voice " of autism.I watched the video and was disappointed.Yes,we do have our " shattered " dreams and overwhelming feeling of dispair..yeah we do..and it's been 6yrs since my son was dx'd and I still have those days,But there is soo much more to living and loving your child who has autism.I could go on about the many " gifts " from my son that I have not always felt worthy of receiving. I want people to know that autism is not the end,it's hard work that requires perceverance and patience...and the rewards...are undeniably priceless.I just feel that for those that are in a position to bring Autism awareness to the forefront have a tremendous responsibility to families AND autistic individuals themselves to be represented honestly and completely..not just showing the negative. Not one mother said anything positive about their child and spoke of them as if they weren't even sitting next to them.Imagine how those kids would feel watching that video about themselves? Guest guest
I also agree. Autism is not a life sentence! Having a child with autism has changed my life for the better. I appriciate life on a whole new level. These women make it seem like our autistic children are unhuman. How depressing to watch that. Bonnie Sayers <bonniesa@...> wrote: I agree. Ever since I saw Suzanne on The View go on about how desperate they were now that they got the diagnosis and made it seem like the kids have a terminal disease, I have been turned off to the organization. I delete most emails from them and disappointed that NAAR teamed up with them. Guest guest
I dunno. I know that my son is a gift. Every child is. However I don't view this video as any kind of threat to my son or his uniqueness or his ability to contribute to our world. Instead, I chose to try to view this video as if I were somebody untouched by autism. The " average Joe, " if you will. I saw it as an educational tool and I'm glad that I did. I've sent the link to this video to FAMILY members (my mom, for example) who just thought that my son was a " bad boy " and/or that I had bad parentling skills. She wouldn't/couldn't listen to me about WHY he does the things he does. Denial. This video helped me show them that autistics don't just gaze at dust particles in sunbeams or that they don't all have the unique ability to count fallen toothpicks at a glance. It helped them to understand that some (read, MOST) autistic children have temper tantrums or say inappropriate things (etc.) and that it doesn't make them bad children if they do. I think that this video has helped me, on a personal level, to help educate my friends and family about what autism looks like in our family and, therefore, has helped our friends and family appreciate our son for what and who he is. It achieved in five or 10 minutes something I haven't been able to do in 2 years. For that, I give the video a thumbs up. I think the production of this video was intended to touch people... to make them aware of an autism they didn't understand, and I think it serves that purpose. At least for our family it has. That's my .02. Hugs! Guest guest
This was forwarded to me by a cousin knowing my grandson is autistic. Amazing the "synergy" Autism Speaks has with politicians and entertainment industries. Apparently, every time the video is viewed the band will pay Autism Speaks .49 cents. I do not know if that arrangement is true, that is what the email claimed. http://www.whatkindofworlddoyouwant.com/videos/view/id/213154See what's free at AOL.com.
