Guest guest
what if you & your family used it to talk to eachother for awhile? make it seem okay that anyone can use it. christinerome <christinerome@...> wrote: hi everyone, its Chris. I am putting a shout out to all who have used a dynavox and anyone else who has any input. is using a dynavox thanks to his teachers suggesting it and my district doing trial run. he is 7 years old and in 1st grade. at first loooved it but when they started to use it in a class with more typical kids he did not want to use it. it seems like he doesn't want to stand out. another thing is he talks and gets frustrated rather than use the dynavox. I just don't get it. one of things well the only thing i don't like about it is it sounds like robot. do you guys think that could be the case too? I would ask him but i don't want to put any negative ideas in his head. he only has a week and 1/2 left to the trail and i;m hoping he will go to it more. does anyone have any suggestions and had the same experince? oh there are some positive things like he likes to spell on and we put information that would help him class that he could go to (he has done this) thanks for any info chris
Guest guest
hi chris! Josh's school finally just started him on a speech device. i'm not sure which one it is and i haven't heard it yet but they said he is taking to it quite well. they have not answered my questions about whether they make him repeat what the voice on the box says, in order to help develop more of his speech and vocab. i'll get more info and get back to you but i will be watching out for the issues is having. like , Josh doesn't like to stand out with his peers either! Guest guest
The mini-merc and vantage (prentke romich) have better voice and are in the same price range. We are getting the vantage for my son. I like the way it is set up better. The dynavox required a lot of programming in the beginning. We trialled the dynavox for 1 month, I think. Goood luck making your decision! christinerome wrote: > > hi everyone, > its Chris. Guest guest
thanks, I was wondering if there are any others out there. The dynavox company at first was giving us a hard time about the trial period. i was a little upset with them. chris Re: [ ] and dynavox The mini-merc and vantage (prentke romich) have better voice and are in the same price range. Guest guest
My son has just started a trial - about 2 weeks ago - with a ChatPC M3. My son is also a little person so the size of this makes it especially appealling. My son is almost 6. He is also on the spectrum. I say this b/c my thoughts will be tainted by our family factors. Carson is still learning that the " voice " gets results vs. showing us the pix on the display. But one of the things I notice and that his consultant noted to us is that this is yet another language that Carson is learning. First PECs, then sign, voice and now the CHAT. It's difficult, it makes him work hard, it makes him make mistakes and he needs to get used to it and comfortable. Our insurance is considering it under a " Protestetic device " (sorry about spelling). With that in mind when someone gets a new leg, it will help them get around better in the long run - but at first it's difficult to get used to and they are tempted to 'stick with what they know' and put the leg in the corner. That is just some of the thoughts our consultant has us think about as we show our son how to use it. Best of luck, PS consider another month of rental - we are doing two months b/c the first month it felt like WE were getting used to it. Now he has April to get used to it more. hi everyone, > its Chris. Guest guest
I know there are some systems that you can record your own voice or a siblings to sound more natural. Our local United Cerebral Palsy office has an assistive technology lab that you can try out different systems for free.
