Guest guest
Hi All I'm in worry mode so thought I'd post and see what you have to say, particularly any Ukers as I think things do differ a bit between the States and here. Since my surgery 4 weeks ago today (upper, lower, palatal split) I have had no elastics/bands other than the first few days, one each side at front top to bottom, after which the surgeon took one look at them, said 'Who put those in (a junior doctor) - they're doing no good at all' and whipped them out! Anyway, my ortho asked me to put elastics in triangular fashion as soon as my splint came out at three weeks. As I got a poke from a wire when it was being done which then ulcerated I held off until last night when, after a 25 minutes session, trying to get them in, I finally managed. Spent an uncomfortable night - my teeth were fairly aching in the morning. I only need to wear them 12 hours at night. I go to reapply them this evening and the bracket with the hook on one incisor has debonded. I was expecting this (but not quite so soon) as it loosened during the surgery. Anyway, my ortho is going to say 'don't worry about the elastics until I see you' (at nearly seven weeks) My concern is most of you seem to have had elastics to keep your jaws together from the start or at least soon after. I've had nothing and now not likely to have any for a while. Has anyone else been as free as this? I find it a bit scary. I know my ortho has not been keen to fiddle about knowing the discomfort. He seems happy to wait until everything is settled. Am I just being a worry wort? I will hopefully speak to my ortho tomorrow. I also want to make sure I'm not in any danger of swallowing this bracket, which I suppose is held on by the 'o' ring. Thanks for listening Sue (UK)
Guest guest
Hi Sue. I don't think you're unusual in not having bands. I had upper/lower six weeks ago. The only time I had bands was when I went in for my one-week check up with the surgeon, and he noted that my bottom jaw had drifted slightly to the left. He put two bands on the right side (not tight), which he removed one week later. Had my jaw not drifted, I would not have had bands at all. The orthodontist left a few hooks on last week because he thought I might need some orthodontic bands for a period of time, but my braces are coming off in 2-3 months so it won't be for long. I think whether you are banded depends on your specific surgery (maybe on whether you had vertical segmentation) and on your surgeon. I'm sure there was a reason for you to not have them and I'm glad I didnt' have to either! > Hi All > > I'm in worry mode so thought I'd post and see what you have to say, > particularly any Ukers as I think things do differ a bit between the > States and here. > > Since my surgery 4 weeks ago today (upper, lower, palatal split) I > have had no elastics/bands other than the first few days, one each > side at front top to bottom, after which the surgeon took one look > at them, said 'Who put those in (a junior doctor) - they're doing no > good at all' and whipped them out! > > Anyway, my ortho asked me to put elastics in triangular fashion as > soon as my splint came out at three weeks. Guest guest
I have a splint in until next week at 4 weeks, and I only had my elastics in for 1 day after the surgery. After I get that out, I'll have nothing from there on out. *tori* > Hi All > > I'm in worry mode so thought I'd post and see what you have to say, > particularly any Ukers as I think things do differ a bit between the > States and here. Guest guest
I am in the US, but I didn't have bands on after the surgery and the next day my OS thought I may be drifting so I wore two bands for three days. I am one week post op today and my OS isn't planning on putting bands back on... Kind of scary, I know... but I am glad. I can already open my mouth one and a half fingers! ~Cathy Elastics/bands Hi All I'm in worry mode so thought I'd post and see what you have to say, particularly any Ukers as I think things do differ a bit between the States and here.
