Hey, I'm 15 years old and I have to have this surgery, both my top

and bottom are out of place (on the side they are cutting out my

wixdom teeth too) My dad thinks i shouldnt have it done yet, while my

mom says yes. I want it only I have never been in the hospital

overnight, not even when i was born. I'm scared of needles to. On top

of that I love to talk and i wont be able to very well right after. I

dont understand this whole thing. Should I wait, or go for it?

Do not get the surgery done!

There are too many things that can and do go wrong.

So many people on this site only discuss what goes right.

Take it from someone whose surgery went horribly wrong.

There is no turning back.

The best advice comes from the doctors who treat you. They know

better than we do if you're done growing and are ready for surgery.

I, too, had never been in a hospital, never been knocked out, never

even had stitches anywhere, when this whole process started. What

really helped for me was to have my oral surgeon - the same one

doing the surgery - take out my wisdom teeth before I got the

braces. I was terrified, but the procedure turned out to be a piece

of cake (I know, I know, hardly anyone says that about wisdom

teeth!) and I was able to experience being knocked out and having

work done in my mouth without going the whole nine yards. I learned

to like and trust my OS and his crew, so that when it came time for

the big surgery half of the fear was gone.

I think the one thing that freaked me out the most when I first

heard I needed surgery was that they were going to cut my bone.

That just sounded repulsive to me. The idea of having my facial

bones cut sent me into a panic. After I had my wisdoms out, I read

a letter that the OS sent to my ortho, saying he had cut one tooth

out of my bone with surgical saws. By this point I was two weeks

past having them out, and had no idea that my bones had been cut.

Obviously it wasn't the big deal that I thought it was, if it

happened and I didn't even know.

If you can have one smaller procedure first, it might help your

fears - but it depends on what your OS and ortho say. They have

much more experience and knowledge, and they know the particulars of

your case.

I think you and your parents should address this specific question

with your orthodontist and with at least one (preferably more) oral

surgeons. You should particularly ask whether they believe your

growth is complete, and why, because a late growth spurt can change

the size and shape of your jaws.

They're the folks with the training and knowledge. Get their opinions!

I would hope that they would also explain what they propose doing and

when. It is usual to wear braces for at least a year before you are

ready for the surgery...

Hi,

I was 12 when they first told me I should have surgery for my

underbite. My mom didn't want me to go through with it and neither

did I..it really wasn't that noticable and I too have never stayed

at a hospital overnight. I did get my wisdom teeth removed when I

was 17. But when I turned 22, and became responsible for all my

healthcare, I realized that this is something I wanted to do. My

suggestion...you still could be growing, so maybe its worth putting

in off a few years until you are sure that this is what you want to

do. The only issue I'm dealing with that I wish I could have taken

care of as a kid is wearing these braces at 24, and I look like I'm

18 so they don't help:)
