Guest guest
Ellen- My hernia does not hurt at all. And it's my understanding that it is not SUPPOSED to hurt. And that if it DOES hurt that it is important to get to the emergency room right away because that means it is STRANGULATING. A strangulated hernia can lead to necrosis (tissue death), infection and can have a dire outcome. My advice is to go to the emergency room if you are in pain from a hernia. That's what my doctor told me about them. -Sherry (Lake Marcel, WA) BPD/DS Feb. 2, 2001 self-pay 5'5 " / 321 pounds / 33 years old Lost 9 pounds in pre-op weight loss efforts Have lost 90 pounds since surgery! Guest guest
Ellen, My hernia has never been painful - as a matter of fact, my PCP at the time told me that if ever became painful it was time for urgent repair of it. (i.e., do not pass go, do not collect $200 dollars - get right in and have it taken care of asap!) Have you seen the doctor about it? If not, I would strongly urge you to do so! dina Dina in Aloha, OR Age 37/BMI 61 Waiting for my consult with Dr. Hoping my new insurance will cover it all.... Hernia I need some insight into hernias. The doctors here think that I might have one and I've read about people having them where they bulge so much they look pregnant. Mine isn't bulging; however it hurts so bad I can not stand straight. How did you put off having it repaired until you lost weight. I don't think I can wait even though I would like to wait until December since I will be off for 2.5 weeks. But I like to walk standing straight and without pain. So, those of you who put this off what did you do so it didn't hurt so bad. Guest guest
what kind of hernia is it? if it is hurting and you can not relieve the pain by changing position.ex..laying down. go straight to the hospital. you could rupture..this is life threating. i avoid heavy lifting, over eating and it seems to help. cheryl

Guest guest
Hi all, Well, I haven't posted before, so let me introduce myself. I'm , had my surgery at Kaiser SSF on March 12 2003. I lost 40 lbs before the surgery and 95 since for a total of 135. I just found out that I have an abdominal hernia and the doctor wants me to get it repaired before the end of the year. He's goign to do it laparascopically. Anyone have experience with this and what can I expect from the surgery, healing times, etc? I'm a single mom with 3 small kids so I'm trying to figure out how much support I have to muster. Thanks,

Guest guest
Hi Helen, Sounds like it could very well be a hernia. I had two hernias repaired four months after my WLS, as well as adhesions. Try lying on your back and pulling up like you are doing a sit up...when you do that, does the bulge stick out more and get more hard? You should see your Dr about this, Helen...In the meantime, avoid heavy lifting, etc.. Best of luck to you...I know how painful it can be. Take care, RN VBG May 6/03 -104lb in 9 mos, now 16 weeks preg with baby #1 Hernia repair x 2 and lysis of adhesions Oct 28/03 > I was lying on the bed the other day and noticed a knot sticking up > out of my stomach about 4 inches above my navel. Guest guest
I have a very good size hernia that started off small...and has really grown (the opening to the muscle is obviously larger). But I've been told that if I had ANY pain with it I was to be seen! Because obstructions can be very serious. There are usually bad things associated with the hernias when they tend to be smaller. The larger ones pose less of a risk for blockage or blood flow problems. I would definitely be seen though. It would be best to be seen by someone who knows something about hernias! That way you get the best first opinion you can. Good luck... I'm now 33 weeks pregnant and this thing looks like an alien. People keep touching my belly in that spot (it's just to the right of my incision site...and about three inchs above belly button) and saying how weird it is that the babies head can be seen. I then explain myself...and it's getting old quick! Sydney mom to three boys with 4th boy due July 10th after losing 110 lbs after Gastric Bypass Surgery hernia I was lying on the bed the other day and noticed a knot sticking up out of my stomach about 4 inches above my navel. It was kinda hard but i was able to move it around. But now when i do very much activity the area around the knot hurts. I was wondering if anyone knew if this was a hernia and if i should call my doc about it. Any help is appreciated thanks helen Children are a blessing, and a gift from the Lord. -Psalm 127:
