Guest guest
here. Last year was a SUPER STRUGGLE in spelling with our 8 yo AS daughter. I will look into that site you mentioned. Last year I helped her study using 4 senses: looking, saying the word and hearing it, and writing, hoping if she didn't absorb the spelling skills with one sense maybe another would work. In our case she could memorize/photogenically remember her words for the test but 1 or 2 weeks later denied ever seeing those words. Even the simple phonetic patterns are not making sense to her. We had her continually practice using a dictionary last year, but it is not a tool she can use because she still doesn't get the simple phonetics. She was diagonosed this summer, which made me realize spelling may be one subject she never gets. She just got frustrated and would quit. I'm not quitting, because I know she still needs to learn how to spell, but this year have decided not to push the spelling. She struggles with her daily writing assignments and I figure that's enough. Besides when she is older and has to type assignments, we can teach her how to use spell check. My NT cousin was spelling challenged even throughout college and is now a teacher. She still has trouble using a dictionary for the same reason and relies on spell check. If she's doing OK, then I'm sure easing off our daughter's spelling this year won't hurt. It seems to be working and life is much more pleasant at homework time this year. Guest guest
I would ask if your son has been tested for Reading/Literacy. There is a Federal Mandate, which aligns with NCLB, that requires states to be testing all students to make sure they are on grade level as far as reading goes. Guest guest
That was brought to my attention by my son's therapist. he suggest that I mention it to his speech teacher, which I did. She said that's not the problem. (dyslexia). I said to her, sometimes he reads the letters in the word backwards. she said, he's in 3rd grade, they still sometimes do this. Is there a " test " that can be done, to test him for dyslexia?. Guest guest
Thank you, I will request that, I'm still completing the O.T. eval for sensory issues. and also request that he get tested for Reading/Literacy. I'm surprised they didn't let me know about that. All the concerns I have and requesting help from them to show me how to teach him to read and spell. they do admit he is behind and its hard for him, including writing & jurnal. But, never did they let me know about being tested for reading/literacy. BIG THANKS ppanda65@... wrote: I would ask if your son has been tested for Reading/Literacy. There is a nice website on dyslexia here --> http://www.dyslexia-teacher.com/t7.html Here is a list of evaluations for dyslexia --> http://www.dyslexia-teacher.com/t9.html I had a favorite website on dyslexia but I can't find it at the moment. But you can google " dyslexia " and find a whole world of information about it. One thing, don't let the teacher blow this off. It doesn't get better, he doesn't outgrow it. And getting help sooner rather than later is a lot easier! This should include a WISC (IQ) and you can also request that they do a Woodcock as well. The subtest scores on the woodcock johnson can tell you many many things, show you where he is behind and ahead and this can help direct you in finding appropriate help for him.
