Thanks!! Beth Beth, I do not think it will add calories unless you got hungrier and ate more. I think the whole reason not to drink during meals and certain times before and after is so that the necessary nutrients from the intake of food is absorbed as it should be without being flushed out with the drinking. This is what I have been told anyway. Anyone else have a different opinion? Wolfie Leeds, Alabama Lap RNY August 27,2003 Dr. Lee A. Guest guest
I have been told not to drink when I eat. I was assuming that the reason was because if I drink, the food will flush right down. But then I was reading someones post, and it was stated that if you drink when you eat, that will add more calories. I am very confused by this. There have been a few times that I had a few sips during my meal, I don't know if I am going down the wrong path with this or not. It hasn't happened often, as I know I'm not supposed to. Can someone enlighten me please? Thanks!! Beth 4/29/03 266/185/
Guest guest
My doctor has told me there are two different reasons not to eat and drik together. The first reason is to keep food in the new " pouch " as long as possible. However, the main reason is if you eat and drink immediately, the food will come back up. I know a few people who have been eating , and not thinking about it, took a sip of water and got sick. The pouch is too small to hold both food and water Mindi 277/206.5/115?? Guest guest
Hi, I was told that the food stays in your stomach longer if you don't drink and eat. I suppose if you are eating like soup, it probably doesn't matter. I usually wait about 1/2 to one hour then I eat unless I am thirsty. > In a message dated 10/6/2003 2:13:25 AM Central Standard Time, > glssblwrlady@y... writes: > Can > someone enlighten me please? Guest guest
Beth, As everyone else has mainly said, the reason for not drinking while eating is that the food stays in the pouch longer, you feel full faster so you don't eat as much and you don't get hungry sooner between meals. If you follow the Pouch Rules for Dummies, it tells you to water load (drink as much as you can) until about 15 minutes before your meal and then not drink anything for 2 hours after. Me being the nonconformist that I am I quit drinking 30 minutes before I eat and then don't have anything to drink until at least 30 minutes after. Most people also follow this. If you drink with meals.even small sips, the food gets washed out and it's really not doing you any good because you'll eat more to replace what is washed out. My thing is, I don't even have anything to drink anywhere near me while I'm eating and when I go out, no matter how many times the server says, " Are you sure you don't want anything to drink? " I just tell them, " No, I just had surgery and am not allowed. Please don't ask again " and continue eating. That is just what I do. Hope this helps! Guest guest
I just got back from my nutritional consult, and they said to avoid drinking as it will wash food out of your pouch, thus making you hungry again. However, they said if you must drink while eating, you should have no more than a shot glass of liquid per meal. W.
