She referred us there. Or you could just call the Cleveland Clinic Center for Autism. It's in the phone book. We went there and met with her. Her office is off Shaker Blvd in the Center for Rehab, I think. She met with us and talked to . Asked him about HIMSELF, which is something you don't usually get. I will send you the link by email. HTH- any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. Connie

Guest guest
Yes, an advocate is wonderful to have if even just to be able to call this person to ask advise on how to handle sistuations that arise at school. I have learned a lot from her and don't need her quite as much as I used to. She also goes to IEP meetings with me if I need her. What state are you in? Guest guest
I've had an advocate attend both my Aspie's IEPs for years now. We first met her when she was an aide in the spec. ed. pre-school. She knows the laws and local school districts strengths and weaknesses inside out. I could get through the IEPs without her but I go into them with a lot more confidence knowing that she's there being a watchdog for my kids. If you can get access to an advocate, by all means go for it. Guest guest
Hello Lori, Yes!, I never go to a CSE meeting without an advocate. The last few CSE meetings I went with two advocates. I see a big difference in having an advocate with me than if I go by myself. The support is great. At a CSE meeting I feel its all of them against me. Good luck to you. lozzy3us <lozzy3us@...> wrote: I took my 6 yr old aspie to the Dr. yesterday and I was telling her some of the things that was happening at school. Guest guest
I am very interested in this as we are changing schools next year and I am very nervous. I live in Alabama, how would I go about obtaining an advocate? Misty Gillispie mlgillispie1980@... Re: ( ) advocate I've had an advocate attend both my Aspie's IEPs for years now. Guest guest
Yes, it was vital for us to involve an advocate to protect the interests of our child (long complicated story that is not school related) but without the help of this entity, I do not believe my child would have ever been " heard. " The advocate was through our Government and is called " The Office of the Child Advocate " - a service which is available free of charge - at least where I am located. Good-luck! > > I took my 6 yr old aspie to the Dr. yesterday and I was telling her > some of the things that was happening at school. She suggested that he > needs a advocate. We have a liazon(sp). Guest guest
So, when you are bringing an advocate to a case conference, do you tell the school in advance? Do you introduce them as " my advocate " ? It just sounds weird, although I am getting less and less concerned about what any of my requests sound like. Guest guest
Honestly, I do not know if there is a " proper " protocol to follow. I would guess that it is up to the parent whether or not to inform in advance, but I would not think it would be a problem to simply show up with an advocate. DO explain that the person with you is there as an advocate to help guide. When things are running as they should there should not be any " hard feelings " over the prescence of an individual who is there to assist a child. Lots of times, if only one person is at a meeting it is easy to become distracted by the issues while attempting to write notes and remembering to ask all questions intended. An advocate can help to recall conversation and if need be, act as a witness. If there is resistence, I would be concerned that there are hidden issues. Personally, I have always informed the advocate would be in attendance. (Then they know I mean business!) Guest guest
I have a friend that lives in Bakersfield CA. She has gone through regional center to try to get services for her daughter. Her daughter is adopted and is delayed, no speech. They put her in a class with children with severe sn's. Her daughter was coming home with the same pull up at the end of the day. She was totally regressing. It was obvious they were not even watching her let alone working with her. She came home with a big gauge in her chest and they had no idea how it happened. She is asking for her daughter to go to the speech therapy preschool. She is being told no because of her developmental delays. The speech teacher is also saying she needs to go to this school. Does anyone know how to go about getting an advocate in the Bakersfield area? Kathy

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone.
