Guest guest
My 6 yr old had been diagnosed with Apraxia and he's come along way since. My question is, for those of you who have children with Apraxia was learning to read difficult for your child? Theresa
Guest guest
Theresa, Learning to read for my son, now age 10, was difficult. He had difficulty learning phonemic awareness, blending, decoding. May I suggest finding an audiologist who is certified in the CAP (central auditory processsing) test. This way you rule out any hypersensitivities to sound, hearing loss, or ringing in the ear. Next stop would be to work with him on learning the sounds of the letters in isolation not so much the letter ID. Once isolation of sounds is in tact, move to blending. My son still cannot rhyme words. This is a red flag!!!! to find an audiologist near you visit http://www.ncapd.org/professional%20directory.htm Another avenue to look down is vision therapy . . . have a developmental optometrist evaluate his sight 20/20 vision as well as the developmental muscles in his eyes. There is a visual perception test that can be given at 6 or 7 plus an eye convergence test. Look at www.covd.org to find a provider near you. Finally, once hearing/listening and vision are in place, you may want to look at cognitive training exercises. I used PACE and if you wish to do it at home there is a program kit they will mail you. I chose to have it done by a provider b/c my son does not work well with me as his teacher. Go to http://www.processingskills.com/ps/index.htm or Master The Code. It is a 10-12 week program. All of this can take some time (nearly 18 months to 2 years). Somethings I did at home were Earobics, www.headsprout.com and www.soundreading.com Cds. Follow your motherly instincts and get early intervention in the areas you see your child struggling. Early intervention usually has a great prognosis. all the best, Joanne
