Hi Tammy,

Many of our children (on this list) have some traits of sensory

integration disorder. My daughter used to have an extreme struggle with

her clothing and still finds it bothersome though manageable. She is

six and does have OCD as her primary diagnosis.

We're not sure whether the Prozac she takes helps with the SID or if the

overall treatment of her OCD, including therapy, has lessened her

anxiety to the point where the sensory stuff is bearable.

When I hear lots of tactile and sensory complaints from her I send her

out to the back yard to do 15 or 20 mintues on the swing. The motion

really seems to help.

Take care,

Lesli

What IS SID and what is tactile defensiveness?

I forgot to say that I'm a single Mum with 3 kids. Ami's Dad refuses to

accept any mental disorder, especially as any excuse for her rudeness at

times.......

Therefore, these urges can be just as upsetting as fears of harm or danger.

Aureen,

We are just beginning to look at the OCD tendencies in our 8 year old

daughter. This is the kind of symptoms she shows ... things needing to be

visually " right " or it " really bugs " her (her words). 3 years ago she was

diagnosed with Sensory Integration Disorder (her primary symptom was/is

tactile defensiveness), so I always thought this " visual rightness " was a

sensory issue. Then this spring Keri started having trouble with

transitioning into school and showing anxiety in that way, plus picking at

her finger with a straight pin. At that point, our peditrician strongly

suggested further evaluation, which we are currently doing.

My question is: is this " rightness " thing totally OCD or can it be sensory

based? These things seem to overlap so its hard to know how to treat

sometimes... I don't want to medicate if we don't have to, so I address the

sensory issue first, but sometimes that doesn't do the trick, especially for

the " rightness " thing.

Thank you for any insight you can provide!

Sincerely,

Tina in Houston
