What is apraxia?

I am new to the group and would like to know what apraxia is. I have

a 30 month old. He says a lot of words but doesn't put very many

together yet into sentences. My friend's daughter talks almost as

good as a 4 year old and she is the same age. Maybe it is the

difference between boys and girls. He says between 30 and 50 words.

I need to recount because he has picked up a few more since I last

counted. His doctor was worried at one time and got his ears checked

but they are fine. Most people tell me he will communicate more when

he gets ready. He is hard to deal with trying to keep him out of

things. He understands me more than I understand him though because

he knows most of what I am talking about when I speak to him (ask him

to pick up toys etc.) I'm not sure if he needs speech therapy or not.

I took it as a child because my teacher thought I needed it, but it

was just because of the way the roof of my mouth is shaped. I didn't

pronounce things as good as they wanted me too. There is a stigma

attached to it at least when I was a child and I don't want to put him

threw that unless I have to.

Have you ever considered enrolling your child in a " preschool? "

He will pick up a lot of words from other kids soon. Please try it for

few hours a day per week. You can also keep talking to him at home,

read books or show pictures to learn labelling, etc. Is he your first

child?

Please reply.

So I guess it is like a real bad case of late talker pretty much. Thanks.

There seem to be so many children in speech therapy these days, I

wouldn't worry about a stigma, and besides, his 30 mos old peers are

unlikely to notice or care about his therapy sessions!

My son's school (he'll be 3 in Apr) sent out a notice for speech

sreening and the SLP's info sheet said that a typical 2-2.5 year old

should be able to use approximately 300 words, with some plurals and

be able to use 2 - 4 word phrases, among other things. Based on

this, it sounds like a speech eval for your child would be a good

idea. Children can have speech delays for a variety of reasons, and

I guess some do " grow out of it " but I wouldn't want to take that

chance, personally. Good speech therapy can be very beneficial and

generally, the earlier you start the better.

Good luck.
