Guest guest
I have had clients who used it and liked it, but the American Speech- Language and Hearing Association has a position statement that expresses concerns with the lack of research to support this technique. Guest guest
My son uses a therapeutic listening program at OT for auditory processing issues. I'm not sure what the name of it is. Basically, he wears headphones for about 30min while doing his OT. He's only been receiving OT for about 1 month so I'm not sure that I've seen any improvements yet. However, his OT (who was very skeptical when she first heard of it) said it definitely works. Supposedly, it will help my son " tune in " when we're speaking to him instead of acting like he can't hear us. He has a problem processing all of the sounds coming into him at the same time so our voices tend to blend in with all the other noises around him at times. I'm hoping it will help. So far, his OT has been very straightforward and honest about what will and will not work for our son. I don't know what issues your son has that the OT is trying to address with the therapeutic listening but it isn't harmful so I would give it a shot. Hope this helps! kristeenp@... wrote: My son's OT suggested that therapeutic listening may benefit him. Has anyone used The Listening Program or any other therapeutic listening program? Guest guest
My son completed AIT (auditory integration therapy) and Tomatis sound therapy. Overall I found subtle signs during the treatment and on Day 10 of Tomatis he actually had a meltdown which I have never seen before. Its almost like grown ups having road rage. The tantrum subsided within 2 hours and became very calm and affectionate from there on. We no longer witness frustration because he has become more verbal with expressing his feelings. He also loves to sing now. We are now allowed to listen to the radio in the car! He is more focused and has better time management especially with homework. He will now sit for 30-50 minutes to complete all his homework in one sitting. My son was diagnosed with verbal apraxia and had sensory dysfunction along with low muscle tone and motor planning disorder. Once we tested his hearing, we found he had hypersensitivities in both ears. His left ear had ringing. With sound therapy, I feel there was a benefit to his auditory processing, but we also have treated his visual processing through vision therapy and cognitive training with PACE together with Master the Code for reading and spelling issues. I also have supplemented at home with other activities. By no means is this a cure, but it did alleviate his hypersensitivities. All the best, Joanne _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of kristeenp@... Guest guest
My 41 month old son has been using Theraputic Listening since last Oct 12. For us it has meant he now takes naps! He takes 4-6 naps a week versus once every week to 10 days. You would think listening for 20 minutes twice a day every day would not be too hard but I have to try hard to remember! (We're working up to 30 minutes twice a day. At first he would listen 7-10 minutes a session now it's 15-20 minutes a session.) My child won't let us listen to the stereo in the living room but he'll listen to the Theraputic Listening cds - wow! > > My son's OT suggested that therapeutic listening may benefit him. Guest guest
Hi, We started the therapeutic listening program when my son was 10mos old. We did not see any benefit--OT explained it was probably due to playing it overhead as opposed to headphones. We plan to try it again when he will keep headphones on, approximately around age 2yrs. I have a friend whose son, 4yrs, won't keep headphones on. She plays the therapeutic listening CDs in the car on the way to preschool. She said it's been beneficial for him -- helps him be calm, focused, and organized for school. It's mainly anecdotal evidence at this point, I believe. Admittedly, therapeutic listening intrigues me because I used to teach early childhood music. I firmly believe in the power of music for many things in life. Good luck to you. Guest guest
Katina, Are you referring to Tomatis?? Is that the same thing as therapeutic listening? Guest guest
I don't believe the position statement addressed a particular listening program, but addressed therapeutic listening programs in general. They had a team that researched the literature extensively and developed the position statement based on that. It was awhile back so I don't recall exactly. Guest guest
Hi,everyone, I am . I didn't post for a few months. How's everyone going? Can anyone prove me any information of the relationship between therapeutic listening and epilepsy. Does the high frequency sounds would cause any epileptic fit? Is it ok for the autism? Good luck to everyone Ting from Taiwan
Guest guest
Thanks, Ruth & Tami. This reminds me also to tell Pete's speech therapist. I appreciate the feedback!
