Hi, my son has had the Kaufman articulation assessment done and his SLP

noted he had either severe phonological disorder or apraxia of speech.

He then transitioned to the School preschool program. The new SLP

wants a Moving Across Syllables assessment. We have been unable to

find out much about this. Anyone have some insights? Thanks,

Amy

Hi Amy,

It is important for you to know that there is a clear distinction

between a phonological disorder and apraxia of speech. The result

from the Kaufman articulation assessment should have made this

distinction. A phonological disorder is a disordered sound system

where as apraxia of speech is a problem with the motor planning for

sequential sequencing of the production of sounds. I used the Moving

across syllables program prior to using the Kaufman program. While I

must admit I like the structure of the Kaufman program much better,

both programs aim to find out exactly where the breakdown of motor

planning happens. Overall, it is my opinion that the Kaufman program

is more thourough and structured. Another big difference is the

Kaufman program encourages teaching developmental simplification

methods of speech production which can be applied to any word rather

than teaching mastery of exact patterns of sound sequencing. It uses

a hierarchy of simplification methods which I feel have greater

success, especially for small children. Hope this helps.
