Guest guest
Hi all Just thought I would share my latest breakthrough....I have seen posts lately re: how the heck do we get these awful tasting supplements in out kids?!? It has been nearly impossible to get my ds to take the EFA's. He has spit, puked, gagged, screamed, you name it. I even discovered that fishoil stains clothes!!! Well a few weeks ago we were all on antibiotics for strep. His was awful tasting (allergic to penicillin - so no tasty bubblegum amoxicillin) but I made him take it. It was a major struggle & several times he only actually swallowed maybe 1/2 a dose. BUT... by the 3rd day he was taking the antibiotics with a minimal struggle. So when the antibiotics were finished I just started mixing fishoil with 1 tsp lemon or lime yogurt (which he loves), 1/4tsp sugar and his probiotics. I put it in the syringe that came with the antibiotics and squirt it into his mouth. It is still a bit of a struggle & we have to have water right there to wash it all down.....but he actually takes it!!!!! I am extatic! I have been on this list for months, agonizing because I couldn't figure out how to make my son take his darn fishoil!! Also - I don't ever give them in the morning just in case he throws a major fit. I don't want him to start the day on a shame spiral & set him up for a bad day at school. Guest guest
I'm a desparate Mom wanting all four of my kids to take fish oil, not just my apraxic son. I happened upon this combination. Seems to work for now. Add a small amount of milk (1/2 teaspoon), then add ovaltine 1/4-1/2 teaspoon. stir, drink right away and follow with vitamin, food or some other chaser. Just my 2 cents worth. Guest guest
I've mixed the fish oils in everything from yogurt (gross) to oatmeal (not so bad since there are other flavors to add to mask the taste/smell - we put nuts, raisins, applesauce, whatever in oatmeal along with the fish oil). Some things work, some don't, and sometimes my kid will psyche me out by taking it straight. Whatever works.... Guest guest
I empty 2 capsules of the pro efa on a big spoon and then pour honey on it. I tell my son to take his spoonful of honey and then I give him his juiceplus gummies. He doesn't mind it at all. ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of sherry silvern Sent: Monday, January 22, 2007 11:01 AM Subject: Re: [ ] Re: Getting our kids to take EFA's I've mixed the fish oils in everything from yogurt (gross) to oatmeal (not so bad since there are other flavors to add to mask the taste/smell - we put nuts, raisins, applesauce, whatever in oatmeal along with the fish oil). Guest guest
i never used to have a problem getting the fish oils or vit Es into my song until recently. he would eat the whole capsule but now he just flat out refuses. now he cries if i even squeeze them in his mouth so we discovered something new today. I squeeze out a couple of capsules in a spoon and then put a mini chocolate chip near the back of the spoon. he'll put the whole spoon in his mouth to get that chocolate chip! i hope this helps someone... Guest guest
Martha, Have you tried the Carlson's Lemon flavored fish oils? I know they still taste like fish, but not as much as others. Also, I mix it with my son's multivitamin, 's, which is citrus flavored, and he takes it as if it were just the multi. He likes citrus, though. I actually have more trouble getting him to take his flaxseed oils than his fish oils. They are not flavored and really do taste nasty. I find that droppers and syringes are easier than cups and spoons, and even the kids prefer them, even though they take longer to dispense. Thanks for the recipe. I'll try it with the flax. > > > > Hi all > > > > Just thought I would share my latest breakthrough....I have seen > > posts lately re: how the heck do we get these awful tasting > > supplements in out kids?!? > > It has been nearly impossible to get my ds to take the EFA's.
