Guest guest
Hi, There is a local anaesthetic cream available here in the UK which numbs the area which means that you just need to distract them - I am sure it must be available in the US too. The only problem with the cream is that you have to wait 50 minutes to an hour after its application for the effect. I am shocked how unskilled some people are at getting blood. We had an awful experience at the Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore for 5 phials of blood. mom to 11 year old son with severe dyspraxia, DSI, severe language disorder, hypotonia Shape in your own image. Guest guest
In Canada there is Emla cream and Emla Patches. It takes about an hour for it to be effective and is available over the counter. In the US there is nothing. The hospitals have Emla cream for those " difficult " patients (like my kids) but there is nothing available for parents over the counter. 9 years dx dyspraxia, hypotonia, SID, DCD, feeding and growth issues 6.11 dx dyspraxia, hypotonia, SID, DCD, feeding and growth issues 16 months suspected dyspraxia, dx hypotonia, SID Hi, There is a local anaesthetic cream available here in the UK which numbs the area which means that you just need to distract them - I am sure it must be available in the US too. Guest guest
The cream is called EMLA cream - either need the dr to give it to you before your appointment or sit at the lab for an hour. Be sure to ho somewhere that does lab draws on children!! Go to the local pediatric hospital if necessary. Frequently the phlebotomists (person who draws blood) will ask for a pediatric nurse to come help if they need extra help. Both lab experiences with my son were awflul!!! We had to hold him down while he writhed an screamed. I had to do it because my dh is wimpy on that front....funny because he is a nurse too!! I can say that he does not seem to have any lasting fears.
