Triple paste is usually behind the pharmacy...you do not need a prescription,

but they keep it there because it is a bit pricey...

A bath with some baking soda has really helped me kids in the past...

[ ] Off Topic: Need help for raging diaper rash,

and theories on causes

Tyler, 11 months old, has developed a raging diaper rash since he

(finally) started eating more than a few bites of solid foods. It's

painful, and he screams in pain very loudly with every BM and

urination. I've tried the usual diaper creams (Balmex, Desitin,

vaseline), and triple antibiotic ointment, but nothing cures it. It

seems to get better or worse based on how many BMs he has.

Does anyone have a magic cure?

Does anyone have a theory about the cause? Yeast? Food intolerance?

Just getting used to solid food?

Also, what is triple paste? My pediatrician recommended it, but there

is nothing with that name at the store. (That's why I tried the triple

antibiotic ointment...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plain old zinc oxide will get rid of it, the higher the zinc oxide

content the better. Wipe the butt with water on a paper towel, no wipes

for a week and it should go away. As for cause, keep a food diary and

see what he ate and when it shows up. If it is yeast it may not go away

and you will have to get an Rx for Nyastatin.

Cause: could be yeast from the body trying to rid itself of a toxin.

Could be food intolerance or even pesticide intolerance on fruit. My

kids got diaper rashes from certain fruits. Turns out it was the

pesticide and not the fruit itself.

Triple paste is a very expensive diaper cream that is tough to find.

It's active ingredient is zinc oxide. We had a week at the beach where

daughter got toppled by a wave, ingested too much sand and had a wicked

rash when pooping it out. I used triple paste for days but found more

success with the Shoprite Zinc Oxide because it had more zinc (a drying

agent).

Another popular one is butt paste but the zinc is the key ingredient so

if it were me I'd go to shoprite.

Hope this helps.

:)

I'm SO sorry he's going through this! My daughter has definitely

been there too. Yes the pee-pee really stings, so lots of tearful

screaming. Ouch!

I won't speculate on the cause, others will be better positioned to

know. Our cause was she was born with severe bowel issues, so none

of that info would apply or be helpful to you. Food sensitivities

and allergies can be to blame though, so keep a food diary to try

and identify and eliminate the problem foods if you can.

But, the solutions.... There are some prescription pastes available

that I assume your doctor knows, at least they were prescribed and

used during our hospital stay. The best solution though was a

mixture the nurses concocted and swore by -- zinc oxide (or the

regular desitin, not creamy) plus stoma powder (typically used when

applying ostomy bags) applied with a tongue depressor and wiped

clean but not totally removed during diaper changes. I know it

sounds weird, but it makes a paste that stays and protects the

bottom from further irritation while it heals. A warm bath is

required to clear it off. You can get a prescription for that

powder.

Ok, now that you think I'm a total kook... The warm bath alone does

help too. As does, leaving him diaperless for a period of time, to

allow for air to dry and heal. Icky to think about and messy at

times too, but it really can be necessary if the rash gets bad

enough.

You might try a google search for more innovative OTC remedies and

info. This is all I have. :-)

None of this is any fun, but it's also not easy to remedy. So sorry!

I'd cut out the dairy as my 2 yr old had open wounds on his rear and nasty

nasty diaper rash since switching to solids at 11 mo. I changed to cloth

diapers (at 17 mo), that helped somewhat, but the real cure came when I took

him off of milk and milk products. I would also watch the citrus as that

can be pretty harsh on their bottoms as well.

My ped. recommended over the counter lotrim saying it was a yeast infection.

That helped a little as well. But seriously, the eliminating dairy was just

amazing as far as his rear clearing up.

funny you say that. Dairy/citrus combo caused those open wounds on son

too. I think he is or will be ok with citrus only in time.

We had the same problem with my son for many years before he was finally toilet

trained. He would get the rash quarterly and it was awful, at times he would not

sit.

It got so bad at times we went to the doctor and the doctor told us we need a

prescribed bacteria ointment. When we used that it healed pretty quickly. The

doctor told us that the skin would get more and more irritate with each rash,

and he was right. In our son's case I think it was a combination of food

allergies and acidity food.

I'm no doctor, but I do have a suggestion for the bad diaper rash. Sometimes the

cremes will make it sting and hurt worse ...... I swear by corn starch. My son

had it real bad the other day and 2 good doses of corn starch cleared it right

up. Hope this helps :)

Oh, , I SO remember those days! My daughter used to get really horrible

rashes all the time, starting when she was a month old and I accidentally ate a

jalapeno when breast feeding her. Her poor bum never seemed to recover from

that and dealing with her rashes became a way of life for us.

Give that baby plenty of air time. I know it sounds horrid and nasty, but he

really needs to be out of that diaper as much as possible for the current rash

to clear up. Set down some towels and try playing with him on the floor. I

know it might be a bit tricky since he's 11 mos to keep him in one place, but do

the best you can so he gets air time. As my daughter got older we would put

down a waterproof lap pad, then some towels, and then sit and read with her on

our laps. Thankfully no battle stories to tell from doing that :). Also, quit

using baby wipes as much as possible. Just use something soft with water. The

baby wipes can be very irritating to a rash.

Two of my boys got yeast infections. If it is a yeast infection, the rash

will be flat and splotchy and when you wipe his bum it will feel like there is

gritty sand on him. You probably won't be able to see the grit (unless the

yeast has gotten really bad) but you will be able to feel it. If it is a yeast

infection, the stuff sold over the counter for athlete's foot will clear it

right up. I know putting athlete's foot medication on your baby sounds a bit

weird, but athlete's foot is caused by yeast so the cream is just a yeast

killer.

I hope you are smarter than I was back in yonder year and can get to the cause

of the rashes. Hang in there - I really feel for you!

We were told to use breastmilk if still nursing...it is natures best

remedy...we also used GoldBond's Diaper Rash Powder....it was the

only over the counter remedy that worked for my 2 boys when they

started eating solids...we also noticed that for them it was the red

dye in foods that caused them to have worse episodes, and it lasted

until they were potty trained....One note on the Gold Bond Diaper

Rash powder is that it is hard to find, so when you do find it you

may want to stock up on it if it works for you....good luck....We do

not yet know if our daughter will experience the same thing yet or

not, but we are ready with the powder.

Hi,

I have always used Aquaphor on my son, and am proud to say he has

never had a diaper rash with it. I think it is really great. You can also

use it on dry chapped skin as well. It is about $8-9 dollars for a tube.

This is true for some things but not so, with my guy anyway, for the bad

rash with open skin. Zinc plus this helps that.

I used to do triathlon (no athlete, I just beat the couch potatoes) and

found this worked great for chapped leg skin from sweat and running.

A couple of ideas:

1st-Is he teething??? My son got diarrhea and then horrible rashes

whenever teething was at it height. I think it made his poop more

acidic or something but it looked nasty. So this might be part of

the problem and you just have to wait it out.

Sorry, there is no magic cure. You'll have to take a multi-pronged

approach.

1. No wipes-they just irritate broken skin (even the " natural "

ones). I went and got a dozen cotton washclothes and right before a

diaper change, wet them with warm water. You wash them just like you

would cloth diapers (hot water with your kids regular detergent).

Then pat dry the area with another clean cotton cloth.

2. Lots of no diaper time will help. Also, we used tepid baking

soda baths every night for a while. This helped also.

3. Ointments-If it is a yeast rash, Lotrimin should help, but I

haven't used it personally. Everybody elses advice on Zinc Oxide is

good too.

4. Internal-Stay away from acidic foods (citrus). If it might be

yeast, add some kind of probiotic (the obvious if your kid isn't CF

is plain yogurt or kefir). If he is CF, you could try adding a

powdered one to his juice or food. I think Jarrow makes one for

babies specifically that I've seen at Whole Foods.

Hope your son is better soon. It isn't fun when they hurt like that.

Triple paste works like a charm every time my son starts to get a diaper rash.

We bought it over the counter in a CVS in NJ, but I know you used to be able to

purchase it through the pharmacy. Definitely ask your pharmacist. There's a

phone # on the container 1-800-533-SKIN and the website is www.sumlab.com.

When Josh was in hospital as an infant, he, too, had raging diaper rash. An

ER doc at the hospital had mixed up a combo of A & D ointment, zinc oxide, and

aquafor - worked like magic.

screaming.

So sorry!

YES!

I have read over and over again that one of the reasons for this toxic affect of

the milk is that we drink way to much of it during pregnancy and when we are

breastfeeding. (I hate milk but drank it daily solely because it was supposed

to be 'good' for the baby!) The child's digestive system is simply not able to

process the milk at this early date.

When you try to introduce it for your baby, go very slowly and wait quite some

time. If you see any mucusy stools upon introduction, drop it and wait some

more.

Hello

Make sure that he does not have a yeast rash. A doc. would best

determine. If you don't want to go to a doc. just try Lotrimin over

the counter (for athletes feet) make sure to get the least dosage

allotted on the bottle. That's what a doc. reccommended me do years

ago. If you go to the appointment they will prob. give him Nystatin

cream for the rash. Also request a food allergy test to make sure

that nothing he is eating is hurting him.

Thanks for all of the advice. Here's my plan of attack:

Finally found the Triple Paste at CVS thanks to you guys. Bought it,

and more of the original Desitan. The triple paste has less of the

zinc oxide, but they jar claims they are the best, and there is a

money back guarantee. Thus, I will try that one for a couple of days.

I am also going to get the cloth diapers out of the attic, and make

some homemade wipes by cutting up a really soft receiving blanket we

have. We have already been doing a bit of naked time, but we'll try

to increase that a little bit. We will also continue with the

chewable acidophilus.

I will report back with what surely will be positive results. If

not, it's back to the store for yeast cream and maybe no more dairy

for mommy.

Thanks for all the advice!

in NJ,

Ouch, i can sympathize with Tyler. 11 months he may be intolerant

to

some foods, but it could be teething also. Was he recently

vaccinated?

My pediatrician recommended a sitz bath with a mixture of vinegar

and

water for 10 minutes. I actually set up a small tub in front of the

tv with a towel underneath so the spills would get caught. I'm not

going to lie, it will sting at first, but as each bath is given my

girls tolerated it.

After the sitz bath, air dry or lightly pat dry, add lotrimin AF

creme

to the area. I would stop the solids until the rash disappears and

proceed to reintroduce new foods every three days. If the rash

reappears, you may find the culprit. In the summer months, changing

the diapers more frequently or even the brand may be the cause.

Most

of my children could wear Huggies, but then I had to change to

Playtex

or Luvs b/c the brand changed their More Improved Diaper . . .

unfortuantely my kid was sensitive to whatever the " more improved "

was.

all the best,

Joanne

I'd try to. That is what started my whole non dairy kick! The baby (then

7mo) was hospitalized and the ped on call said that I needed to go off of

dairy to clear up his eczema. It worked. ;)

Oxalic acid is really caustic. It can cause the type of diaper rash

you are describing.

Hi, newcomer here and I don't mean to butt-in but It occured to

me to ask if he's been tested for food alergies? Just a thought.
