You might talk to your doctor about giving him Melatonin. It's

something used with children with autism because they have

difficulty sleeping also. It's something that your body produces

naturally, but some have trouble doing so.

We give our 4 1/2 yr old Melatonin each night. She still sometimes

wakes up in the late night/early morning but is generally happy --

just awake!

I have not had this experience, but I've heard others talking about

this and the cause was tummy distress. Some things that may help:

epsom salts in the bath before bed (start w/1 t. & very slowly work up

to 1 c.) this helps detox the body & is calming, magnesium supplement

before bed, looking into possible food senstivities or supplementing

with enzymes.

my 2 cents-

thanks, I will have to try that. What would be a good magnesium starting point?

Have you looked into food allergies? my oldest who is now 29years old used

to wake about 2 hrs into his sleep crying for the first 3 years of his life

and it wasn't until he was around 8 or 9 that we figured out he was wheat

intolerant (at that time we were put into a corner when the public schools

recommended he be seen by a psychiatrist for depression). All that

suffering just due to wheat allergy.

LeAnn, I have gone through sleeping issue with both of my sons.

, my 4 yr old, didn't sleep through the night until he was 10

months old. His problem turned out to be that he wasn't getting the

naps he needed during the day. (First time mom, I'm embarassed to say I

didn't know he needed naps, I just figured he'd sleep if he was tired)

[: " >] . Ethan my 29 month with verbal apraxia and motor planning issues

was a totally different story. Ethan, from the time he turned 1 until

about November 2006, had sleeping problems. From ear infections to

troubles breathing from asthma, we've been through it all. Start with

eliminating if he's coming down with a cold or has an ear infection.

With Ethan many times this was the only indicator of illness (which

seems to be all the time). Has your son's eating habits changed? Has

he had any changes just in everyday events? Has his 2 yr molars come

in? When I had exhausted everything, I tried giving my son Motrin. At

times Ethan will cry out and he too is still sleeping, I read in a book

called " Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child " by Marc Weissbluth, MD that

these are called " Night Terrors " usually these affects children between

4 - 12 yrs however I am convinced that Ethan has had them. They are

caused by not enough good quality sleep, which I have noticed Ethan

usually has Night Terrors or wakes up many times a night when his nap(s)

were off. The book that I mentioned was " God Sent " it is a must read!

Hopefully this helped I know first hand how being deprived of sleep

hurts emotionally and physically! Let me know what happens and good

luck!! Leane Mom of 4 & Ethan 2

My son hasn't been sleeping for over a year. He is 3 1/2 years old.

After ruling out all possible allergens, changing his diet, etc. Took

him to see if he was seizures, etc. Finally, I took him to an ENT.

His tonsils are enlarged and it could be contributing to him not

breathing properly and waking up in his sleep. So, tonsilectomy and

adneoidectomy are scheduled for April....

He also had night terrors for 4 months...I would go ointo his room and

he would hit a scream. I found if I left him alone, he would settle in

his crib and fall back asleep.

Have you had him checked for Acid Reflux?

My son had it when he was younger and he would wake up screaming

several times per night. You said you changed his diet, have you tried

to remove milk for a few weeks? If not, try swiching him off of milk

into soy milk or almond milk for a few weeks and see if it improves -

you also need to replace cheese, yougurt, etc - ).
