Thanks for the link, although it says the upper limit for a 2 year old is only

300IU. Does anyone have any info I could pass on to a pedi that supports the

800iu range?

Thanks,

Golden

[ ] Website on Vitamin E

I really gained a lot of useful information from this site so I thought I'd

pass it along;

Golden,

I tried to get my Ped to help with this, and I really appreciated when she

admitted that she was not an expert on supplements. I am just telling you this

because many docs will scare you about Vit E. If this is your case, please

don't be scared and seek advice from a professional that is knowledgeble on

these supplements if you wish to. As Dr. always says, our kids

are different and I have had many Drs (GI, Nutritionist, Pediatric

Endocrinologists) confirming to me that they do need several times the amount of

reccomended dosage for the normal population.

The benefits of everything you will see on this site are well worth a try!

Good Luck,

Deborah

Oh, I'm not questioning the safety and neither is his doctor. I would just like

to send her something about " why " so that is doesn't just feel like I am

randomly picking a vitamin to give in high doses.

I was just pointing out that the website that was shared said that Vit E

upperlimits were much less than what we are all giving our kids.

Thanks,

Golden

Golden - One good website that might help you answer the

question " why " is the Merck online (www.merck.com). Just type in

Vitamin E in the search box. You'll see that Vitamin E deficiency

has symptoms listed as " spinocerebellar ataxia with loss of deep

tendon reflexes, truncal and limb ataxia, loss of vibration and

position senses, ophthalmoplegia, muscle weakness, ptosis, and

dysarthria. "

Many of these symptoms mimic the symptoms we see in our apraxic

kids. It isn't necessary to exhibit all of the symptoms. My son

didn't have the the ataxia, ptosis or ophthalmoplegia, but he had the

rest. And Vitamin E has alleviated the symptoms.

No one chose a random supplement - if you search the message board

for some of ' early posts on this subject you'll find

how she came to the conclusion that Vitamin E might help her son and

all of the research she did prior to giving him the first dose.

It is because the upper limits reffer to the " normal population " (even that is

being revised).

Does your child have an issue with low muscle tone or just speech?

The doses picked for children are totally arbitrary. Actually so is

the " upper safety limit " for that matter.

Investigators gave rats 30,000 grams of vit E, and at that level, say

impact on vit K (but not below)...antagonism of vit K really being

the only " adverse effect " I've seen listed. Wanting to give humans a

300 fold " cushion " for safety...levels below 1 gm are considered

safe. How's that for science. But talking to vit E experts they are

not concerned about doses < 1 gram...even in kids. J Stordy PhD

describes 3000 iu as being safe in a 3 year old. See her book LCP

solution: The nutritional approach to dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD.

Her comments in this book are very reassuring as this is a dose even

higher than I am currently using. 1 gram = 1500 iu. 800 iu is very

safe. Consider adding vit K supplement if/when anyone approaches 1

gram a day if you want to be cautious. Of course anyone on blood

thinners (warfarin/coumadin) needs to be very careful or avoid vit E.

Wait! Just to be clear! I'm not questioning the safety of high doses of Vit E

and I am not saying that Caludia or anyone here has randomly picked E instead

something else!

I was just trying to find some info that I could pass onto my already

supportive. She didn't question it's safety- she was just wondering where it

came from!

Thanks for the link!
