Guest guest
Dear Keba, I'm sorry that you have been doing so poorly. I hope that you see this and haven't had to be admitted to the hospital, you know with your diabetes and CP that sickness can really run you down. More than likely, though, if you are running such high BG's, that means that you've got some infection or something going on. I hope they can get it straightened out. If you read my husband's post from last week, you'll see that I just jumped into type 1 diabetes, too. I went into diabetic shock a week ago Tuesday, ended up at the ER with diabetic ketoacidosis, BG levels over 1,000 and in ICU for four days. To say that it was quite a shock, both physically and mentally would be a gross understatement! I am still recovering, and trying to adjust to the diabetes diet, which is so very contradictory to the CP diet, and get my insulin needs straightened out. They raised me to 35 units on my Lantus yesterday, but I believe that was too much, since I woke up in a cold sweat and this morning had the shakes, confusion and a fasting low of 64. I've been on such a steep learning curve with the diabetes that I haven't been able to spend as much time here with the PAI as I'd like to. My pancreas is pretty much burned out as a result of the DK, the docs said that I have total pancreatic insufficiency. So it's out with the old, in with the new! The pain is all gone, though, and that is a blessing. You mentioned the duragesic patches and not having any swelling. I don't know if that was meant as an answer to my earlier inquiry about this, but I did find out that the swelling was due to a sudden increase in insulin and fluid retention from all the IV fluids in the hospital, which makes perfect sense, since I went from producing no insulin to high doses of it while in the hospital. I've exercised the ankles and legs and it's almost gone now. Some walking and rocking in a chair, flexing the legs and ankles did wonders. I pray that the docs, or you on your own, can get you back into better health. I know from experience now that such high BG's all the time can totally drain you....is there a reason why they haven't increased your baseline insulin to help bring this down? Best thing for you now is to turn yourself into a couch potato and get some much needed rest. I hope the doctor's appointment went well and he was able to help you. Email me anytime if you want someone else to talk to about your troubles, we can have our own pity party and maybe find a way to laugh ourselves through the tough days. I got worse and right now I am fighting to not go back in the hospital. I am on insulin for the diabetes, I got diganosed with it about four years ago. I jumped right into being Type 1. I have been on a lot of pain meds over myn life and the duragesic patch was okay. I myself didn't have any kind of side effects with the swelling of my leg's or feet. I am sick as heck right now. I have had a temp of over 100 for the last few weeks, my period is here (sorry guy's for being graphic) and so my pain is even more sever then ever. My doc really want's to put me in the hospital I do have a doc's appt tomorrow at 1 so if I don't get back to you that means I am probably in the hospital. Hope that everyone has a pain free day...take care all... KebaJ.
