Hi,

I am new here, a bit dazed and confused from lack of sleep and pain

at that point where I can't think straight. I think I am in trouble,

my latest attempt at relief fell through and my doctor says he doesn't

know what else to do. (It was a nerve block) I have tried stents,

drugs, hypnosis, massage, accupuncture, vitamins, a chiropractor,

vinager, sleeping pills, enzyme therapy and dieting, I may have missed

something, but now my unemployment is running out as well as my money,

so if any one has any suggestions?

I have idiopathic chronic and severe pancreatitis, am 45 years old,

and end up in the hospital about once every six weeks. My last attack

scared my sister so bad she kicked me out of the house. (My nephew is

only four and hasn't said boo to me since the attack.)Just a few weeks

prior to that, a friend of mine since fifth grade died from

pancreatitis, so my family has been treating me with kid fingers now.

My son is eleven and freezes up whenever I have an attack and I have

so far been unable to get his thoughts on all this. I know he is

afraid I will die and I can't tell him every thing will be ok. My own

up bringing was emotionally brutal and so I have no real understanding

of his sensitivity.

It took years of therapy for my doctor to finally explain that I

suborn my emotional pain so much, he has to describe them to me. It

got me through as a kid, but now it triggers attacks of pancreatitis.

(While going to him, my attacks actually lessoned, in intensity and

duration)

How can some one like me get through to some one like him? He is out

going, friendly, warm, trusting, and well liked. It tears him up to

see me being carried off to the hospital, but you all know haw sudden

these attacks can happen, if I could I would shield him from all this.

His mom is the one that made him who he is, but she is too good at

seeing what she wants for me to get through to her.

With all the medications I am on, my sex life has been zilch for

going on six years. Pain is my only lover any more. If only I could

get a divorce.

I feel much better now, I have been pretty suicidal in my thoughts

lately, maybe this felling of getting it off my chest will last.

Thanks for being here, I have no one else to understand where I am

coming from. Maybe the pain well drop enough I can sleep.

Thanks for being here, I do feel better.

G.M.,

I am so sorry you are having such problems with CP.

I also have CP due to a pancreas divisum (divided pancreatic

duct). It's birth defect and I've officially been having

problems since I was sixteen (though they are now thinkning

I've been fighting it all my life) and I'm now 32.

If you have any instant messenger programs, I have AOL,

Yahoo and MSN, with which you can reach me when I am online,

feel free to contact me anytime and we can talk. My AOL and

Yahoo screen name is :hominidtwo My MSN screen name is

hominid2. Feel free to add me to your buddy lists. Or you

can email me directly if you want to:

hominid2@....

Have you tried to get SSDI or SSI? The earlier you try to

get it, the more likely you'll be eligible.

Best is to find a lawyer who deals with this and is willing

to only be paid if you win. We have one here for the group

to use and you can reach him via the email :

ssdcavalry@.... He only uses this email address for the

PAI group here. I'm afraid I can't really help you much

with your son as I am single and have no kids.

If you are having suicidal feelings, it might be time to get

a psychologist. I have one and he has been very helpful in

dealing with this horrible disease. He's even taught me a

number of meditation exercises that help in reducing my pain

levels (though they only work for about 2 hours - it's still

2 hours of relief). And when I'm feeling particularly

depressed, he helps me out of it. In fact, one of my

homework assignments from him this week is to watch a funny

movie to help make me laugh, because laughter has been known

to help deal with chronic pain and depression.

I hope this has helped you some and look forward to hearing

more from you.

G.M.,

Welcome to the group. I'm a newbie here too. I can say that in less than a

full week, I have already learned a lot about pancreatitis and the people

that suffer from it. Though I certaintly don't want anyone to suffer from

this, it is good that those of us that do suffer from it, and our family and

caretakers have a place to find stregnth in sharing.

You have already received wise suggestions about pursuing SSD now as soon as

you can and about the group lawyer, or finding your own. I have no

experience with SSD or SSI or anything such thing but I have been told by

doctors that when/if it comes to that point getting a lawyer is very

important.

I too have depression, but I had it long before I had my first attack of

pancreatitis. Mindset is really important in order to keep up stregnth to

heal, and to keep up resilience to pain. Finding acceptance within yourself

is really important. Personally I find listening to music a great way to

occupy my mind and stregnthen my will. It feeds the soul too. Make sure to

find some way to reward yourself for all the pain you are taking on. If

nothing else than finding some peace and acceptance for yourself, some

beautiful music, and some meditation or prayer (no matter faith you follow).

Remember to tell yourself that your life is a gift and no matter how hard

things are, and had poorly your family understands you and your situation,

that you have a right to live and to strive for the highest quality of life.

I hope none of this sounds like hogwash, but I really do believe life is a

gift and so I face each day as best I can.

Keep writing and sharing -- it will help.

Best of luck to you and may you find some freedom from the pain.

Hi Marisa,

Thank you for the words of support. They help more than you know. I

have had this condition all my life, but since September, I have had

little but pain to occupy my thoughts. I tried school but in trying to

study I stretched out my pain medicine, and ended up in the hospital

and had to quit.

I just can't seem to shake this dispair, though I know I will get

better in time. I am waiting for some advance in medicine and I am

sure it will come one of these days.

I hope it comes in time that you can have a child and that I can see

it. Best wishes and thanks again for your support and encouragement.
