Guest guest
I remember responding to you on this subject a very long time ago! lol It is normal! This is one possible symptom of die off. The yeasts and other pathogenic bugs are hungry and many of them are dying, upsetting the stomach to no end. This will pass. Your son, even though maybe eating less, is still eating enough, so don't worry. The tantrums will end. His nervous system is completely aggravated right now. The beginning is very hard, I know. Remember, the nervous system lines the digestive system, and the two body systems that share the same brain chemicals...the nervous system and digestive system, are going through an upheaval. Even adults get emotional, when they have bad fungal/bacterial die off at the beginning of SCD. Some people get physically sick, some get the emotional symptoms. Take care and give your son big hugs for being such a trooper! Guest guest
I loved this...it explains so much. I think we are going to go bankrupt we are all so hungry all five of us! It is rediculous that amount of food we are eating. I use to feel like the " king " movie " thinner " ...I have gained two pounds in 20 days! YEAH! I was becoming worried about refractory sprue! So I must be starting to absorb...our daughter KIKI is even looking better...yet I don't know what her weight is....she us to just pick and fuss...she still will not eat " suspicious " foods (due to us accidentally " poisoning " her as a young baby)...yet now eats all the time...it is such a joy to see her EATING! About the chicken carcass.....no joke...KiKi cleaned off a DUCK carcass...I just laughed...I thought I was the only one who did this....she kept on asking for more and more...so I gave her the whole darn DUCK! This made her very happy and very greasy! She also does not want help with eating....you never touch her food! She was a pleased as a duck to have the entire duck to herself! Re: extremely hungry Hi Kelli! Everything that you described is normal. My kids have been on SCD for 3 months, and we went through this exact same thing at the beginning. They acted as if they were starving all the time. Apparently this is a normal reaction when you change to this diet. I have read that when your body is done digesting food, the brain sends out a hunger signal for you to eat again. So my thoughts were that since my kids were finally digesting their food (rather than having it sit and ferment in their gut), they were getting hungry more often. Also, when the body begins to heal, it requires more energy to do its work. This energy comes from the SCD food. So my point is . . . feed that boy! His body has a lot of work to do ! The good news is this should only last a month or two (my kids maintained this hunger state for 2 months). Then it levels off because the body isn't working as hard since healing is well underway. I hear you about the behavior/tantrum suspicion. I debated this too. I was irritated by having to be in the kitchen constantly getting seconds, thirds, fourths, snacks, second snacks (at one point I got so frustrated I just plopped an entire carcass of chicken in front of my 3 yr. old and told him to stop asking me for food . . . . He ate it all). And our family is not one to indulge inappropriate behaviors. However, I came to realize this was a legitimate need for this point in time. His irritable behavior is probably due to die-off. Also, he may be experiencing some " withdrawal-type " symptoms. If this is not his normal behavior, this should ease up in a couple weeks as well. The good news is - it is only a season (albeit a long one). Hang in there! This too shall pass. Cordially, Jeni Lynn SCD 3 weeks mom to Margeaux, 5 yr. Guest guest
Our entire family went through/going through a reaction similar to drug withdrawal! I was glad to learn that most call it " die off " ....we all wanted are starchy foods back...our four year old son....suffered the most....as adults we could justify our cravings and fight our urges, the one year olds....they had no choice....our poor son.....he had no idea what we where doing to him...taking away his goodies again....it hurt him.....he cried a lot at meals too...and said he was never going to eat again and thru a tantrum in the beginning.....yet now he is HUNGRY ALL THE TIME! Antoinette (SCD entire family on day 20) extremely hungry My son has been extremely hungry and begging for food (basically emotionally falling apart at every mealtime). He seems to be eating a fair amount of food so I am pretty sure he is getting enough calories. He is 3 ½ and average in height and healthy weight. He is on the INTRO.day 2. Breakfast: 3 chicken/egg pancakes, 2 cups of jello Snack: 2 chicken/egg pancakes and 1 cup jello Lunch: 2 hamburger patties and 1 chicken/egg pancake (I offered carrots and he didn't want them) Snack: 3 pancakes Dinner: 1 ½ cups of chicken soup (w/pureed carrot) and a pancake He has been extremely oppositional and crying a lot but especially around meals. He had these episodes (the emotional breakdowns) previously but not so much around mealtime. I seem to remember this happening in the group a year ago when we first tried SCD but I couldn't find anything when I searched. Is extreme hunger normal at the beginning? Do you think the emotional breakdowns are part of the die off? Guest guest
Yes. huge increases in hunger are also very common. Moms and Dads often find they do *a lot* of cooking and food preparation especially at the beginning of the diet. Once people start the diet they often have increased appetites for a few reasons: -they don't feel sick anymore and actually get their appetite back -their body is switching from rumen type digestion to actual human digestion -their body is healing (which will burn extra calories) - and the big one we have noticed on the children's list is that they start catching up in growth. Many have reported huge growth spurts. Their body is able to continue normal growth patterns now that it is absorbing nutrients whereas preSCD many have reported their kids were at the lower percentiles for weight and height. Put it all together and you have huge appetites Sheila > > If it makes you feel any better...we are always hungry too! I hope that it passes! Guest guest
Yes. huge increases in hunger are also very common. Thank God for those who know what to tell us to help us feel better! Thank God this HUNGER will pass. > > Antoinette (SCD entire family day 18) > Re: extremely hungry > > > I remember responding to you on this subject a very long time ago! lol It is normal! > Summer > > Kelli wrote: > > > My son has been extremely hungry and begging for food (basically emotionally > falling apart at every mealtime). Guest guest
Gosh, I can’t even imagine! Kai is already such a big kid, lol. I have been giving him HUGE servings and just resolving to save the leftovers if there are any. It was just a huge adjustment…as is the cooking. Thanks for the help! ...........
