Of course you will not be kicked off the list for posting this valid concern.

There are references to lactase on Elaine's website:

http://ccgi.cobbler.plus.com/search.php?q=lactase

and in BTVC page 77 edition 10 and some previous pages (see index).

Although we can use a few drops in whipping cream, other treated milks like

Lactaid and

Lacteeze are not permitted.

You seem to be doing a lot of careful research to answer your quest but I think

Elaine went

through most of these things over time and stated her parameters. Perhaps she

didn't give

enough detailed reasons for her decisions but I put a lot of trust in Elaine's

protocols.She

is one of the few diet authorities I trust.

Zyme Prime has lactase, the enzyme that digests lactose. You could mix it in a

small amount

of food before breast feeding. The Zyme Prime is made by Houston

Nutriceuticals,

#1-, website at www.houstonni.com

Ask for the SCD legal version.

" Zyme Prime " would be what you'd want then. You might not need a

compound done, this has no rice in it. From their website:

" Each capsule of Zyme Prime contains:

Amylase....................12,000 DU

Glucoamylase..................25 AGU

Protease 4.5..............40,000 HUT

CereCalaseT...................400 MU

Alpha-Galactosidase.........200 GalU

Lactase.....................1500 ALU

Lipase.....................200 FCCLU

Cellulose, medium-chain triglyceride oil, water

Zyme Prime is free of rice, gluten, casein, soy, MSG, salicylates,

sugar, and artificial colors. "

Please read this discussion on lactose in breastmilk including

Elaine's responses from our old list. The summary is that once the

mother is SCD legal than the child should imporve:

http://lyris.dundee.net/read/messages?id=251380#251380

I am not 100% sure on this but I believe that breastmilk also

contains the enzymes needed to break down lactose. If you store the

milk and heat it up the enzymes may be broken down but it likely

depends on high heated etc...

What would also be important is what you eat. You may want to go

back to a basic SCD diet. If you eat cabbage etc. (food she isn't

ready for) this may bother your daughter.

Maybe I'm confused... do you want to supplement the enzyme lactase

to render breastmilk " legal " on SCD??

There's no need.

Breastmilk contains lactase among other enzymes.

And probiotics. And macrophages and immunoglobulins... :)

I'm thinking that sounded smarmy... I didn't mean to!!

If you do think it will make a difference there is an lactase enzyme

product with just glycerine and water called Colief:

http://www.colief.com/faq.htm

The other issue with breastfeeding and the lactose issues is the

amount of fat in your milk. This greatly changes with diet and what

you eat directly influences the fat in your milk, for example, if

you eat trans fats they appear in your milk. If you eat traditional

fats like butter, cod liver oil, coconut oil, your breastmilk with

be richer in fats and the lactose percentage is reduced. This is

common in the early days of bf'ing with oversupply, too much

foremilk it's called and not enough hindmilk, the fatty stuff.

However, it's not always talked about that the mother's diet greatly

influences the content of her milk and that needs to be taken into

consideration if there is a problem with a babe's digestion. And how

SCD is that! ;)
