Patty,

if it was me, I'd go for the pancreatectomy. I know it's a

bigger surgery, but it's more likely to give her normalcy in

her life. She won't be diabetic, but she will have to take

enzymes for the rest of her life, but she also shouldn't be

in pain. I don't qualify for it as I'm a diabetic already so

I have no islet cells left. Get it done while Cassie still

has some islet cells left. Again, this is my personal

opinion since Cassie has no anatomical problems to fix in

the pancreas, so why do it?.

Kimber,

Glad your back I missed you! That's were everyone head is right now(the

family) But more impartantly it's what Cassie wants - She says after the

surgery and recoverey period her pain will be over - so what if I have to

take enzymes - at least I won't be in pain without relief, I won't have to

stick myself with a needle and maybe people will start treating me like

everyone else. Problem we have with thia is when I e-mailed her Dr's about

exploring this option neither one of them E-mailed me back at all. This is

my second mission for her, the 1st is getting her pain relief now.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, hope 2003 is much better for you.

Patty,

you might want to talk to Cassie's doctors about this during

an appointment. Not all doctors respond to email (I know my

GI doesn't). Don't be discouraged if they don't know what it

is or if they say it's experimental. At lot of doctors do. I

would recommend contacting Dr. Sutherland and then making a

decision on whether or not you intend to pursue this for

Cassie.

thanks for your input. And info you sent. What does NOLA mean? My husband

and I have an appointment with her PCP on Thursday and I am going to broach

the subjest with him to start with. I've all ready printed out informationon

on it. I'm not sure what procedures I am going to have to go through to get

approval from my insurance company and Medicare, especially since I do want

Dr Sutherland to do the procedure. After all I hear he is the man. And we

live in Maine. My insurance company has been grat so far. Every time I have

to notify them of admission to hospital or ER visits they always ask, when

are they going to figure out her proble, she's only 12 and should not suffer

from thid.
