What does it mean when a 10 yr. complains his CHEST HURTS only his left side

when he breathes? Its been hurting since 6. mucous plug?

He is pale but otherwise driving me crazy!

Rosemary in New York with 3 children with CF - they are 12, 10, 6...I coined

the phrase " BREATHE DAMMIT " ; and now we have a dog named - are you ready for

this - TOBI after their medication!

Rosemary,

My 10 year old will complain once in a while to about chest pains and I have

talked to her doctor about it but he doesn't think it is CF related. He

thinks for a girl it is just growing pains. Now for a boy I am not sure what

it would be. Deb A

He is acting normal so for now I will use that as my measurement tool. One

smart Dr. said how the child acts is part of the issue.

He is driving me crazy!!

I dunno what it means, but I've been doing something similar to that since I was

a kid. Hurts like all heck, but goes away after anywhere from a few minutes to

a few hours. Sharp stabbing pains, lower front left chest in the rib area. My

mom always said it was growing pains. (If it doesn't go away, I'd take him to

the doc, though...)

Any time your child complains of chest pain (or any pain) is a good

opportunity to teach your child how to identify and describe

symptoms.

Ask specific questions to get them thinking about what's going on. If

you don't start doing this now, then as they grow older they won't

have a clue how to talk to doctors because they're used to having a

parent do it for them.

For chest pain, get specific:

1. What were you doing when you first noticed the pain?

2. Where exactly does it hurt? (upper, middle, lower, right, left,

both sides? -- show them pictures of the lobes of lungs and use the

correct terms)

3. Is the pain sharp or dull?

4. Is the pain constant, or only when you take a deep breath?

5. Is the pain worse when you lie down, sit, or stand?

6. Does it hurt to lie down on that side?

7. Does it hurt if you move your arms up, down, in circular motions?

8. Are you coughing up more mucus than usual?

9. If so, has the mucus changed color?

10. Is there blood specks or streaks in the mucus?

11. How much water have you had to drink today?

12. Is the air in the room too warm/dry?

13. When was your last breathing treatment?

14. Do you want a breathing treatment to see if it will help?

The idea is to get them thinking about their body and teach them to

think and communicate analytically. Asking specific questions also

gives you a chance to determine if it's a potentially serious

situation.

Everyone defines pain differently, especially young children. It may

be difficult for someone to tell the difference between pain inside

the lung and pain outside of the lung.

Chest pain can be a strained muscle from recent bouts of excessive

coughing (you can actually displace a rib from hard coughing); muscle

soreness from recent upper body exercise to which you are

unaccustomed (tennis, swimming, gymnastics, baseball, bowling, etc.);

a cramped muscle from propping up on elbows watching TV or sleeping

funny; dehydration; a mucus plug, air trapping, pleurisy, or worse --

a pneumothorax (lung collapse).

While you're asking the questions, always stop what you're doing to

give your undivided attention -- maintain eye contact, and take note

the big picture:

Has my child's activity level changed?

Has his appetite changes?

Are there dark circles under the eyes and pale skin?

Has my child been sleeping well lately?

Is he breathless, struggling to breathe, panting, are ribs

retracting, is there a dry or productive cough?

What are the nailbed and lip colors -- pink or blue?

Has there been recent vomiting? (possibly strained muscles)

Is there a fever?

Is there axiety or fear from a recent traumatic event?

Has my child recently started exercising, a sport, or sustained a

blow to the chest?

has mentioned chest pain only a few times before. We've been

able to rule out worst-case scenarios but I never take pain of any

kind lightly. Pain is a signal that something is amiss -- maybe not

greatly amiss, but enough that your body is talking to you.

As a mom, I tend to get a certain gut-gripping reaction when my child

with CF and asthma suddenly tells me his chest hurts. Believe me, I'm

poised for the worst while hoping for the best!

We recently went through a chest pain episode. From past experience,

knew when he called me that he should be prepared to give a

clinical description: " It's high in the upper right lobe; it's a

sharp pain, hurts more when I take a deep breath, I can't really take

a deep breath... I feel better when I sit quietly, worse when

standing up moving around; no I'm not coughing more, no I'm not

coughing blood, no I don't have a fever... "

I was worried (and scared!) because this came on suddenly -- the day

after he flew back on a 4-hour nonstop flight from Los Angeles to

Chicago. And HE sounded worried so that really worried me. And it's

**really** scary because puts a lot of trust in me -- not

doctors -- when it comes to health issues! That's a lot of pressure.

In this instance, I felt an x-ray was necessary, but is 23, not

12, so the decision was ultimately his. He wanted to try a breathing

treatment first, then xray if not better.

So we compromised; he left work, met me at his apartment to do a

breathing treatment and let me listen to his lungs with the

stethoscope and do an overall health assessment. If not improved or

if he worsened after the treatment, then he agreed to go to the ER

for an x-ray.

The episode was scary, but ended up resolving okay in about three

days with some diligence, care, and paying very close attention for

changes.

You don't have to scare your kids, but absolutely you have to teach

them to *know* their bodies and look and listen for changes.

Thank you thank you thank you. What a GREAT response. I am sure everyone

benefitted from it. knows his body well - out of my 3 is the best at

Hi! Took to Dr. - remember his chest pain - well, Dr. thinks its reflux

and he is on Zantac.

is now on Augmentin and Zithomax - since she still coughing.

Both had sore throats and stomachs hurt so they did throat cultures too.

Always something.

My girls are complaining of stomach and sore throat I am hoping it is just a

virus. Natalynn goes in for a throat culture on Wed. We are hoping for a

negative culture. Deb A
