if this were me, i would have to reply to this statement with a

letter...stating that if you were hyperthyroid, you would certainly have to have

hyper

symptoms...not hypo ones.

With a P.S. stating " Dosing by the TSH is not a good practice for the

patient " .

As usual, SandyE has given great info below!!

I, also, have always taken Ferrous Sulfate simply because it's cheap

and I'm cheap. LOL. When I was that low, I took 2-3 325 mg. tabs a

day--and ALWAYS with food.

You will want to get your Ferritin above 60 and preferably above 80.

Janie

> You can buy ferrous sulfate I think it's called at any pharmacy,

for very cheap. It's got to be asked for as it's not on the

shelves. Just ask your pharmacist for it.

really hate when they do that. There is just so much more to hyper

than a low TSH, and I really wish these dr's would get it through

those thick heads of theirs. lol.

disease. Until they've walked a mile in our shoes, no textbook in

the world is going to help them to understand. I'm thinking of

saving up all my wishes in hopes that all endo's become hypoT just

so they can learn how to live with all that we have who only follow

the dr's rules. I know that is quite tacky of me to wish such on

anybody, but it's the only way I know to get the attention of those

who think they 'know it all'. A year of this diesease with no

relief, while adding anti depressants, and fighting high cholesterol

will fix them right up. (vbg).

Your dr is basing your so called 'hyper' on the TSH alone. I really hate when

The reason the internist feels that you're 'way out there' with self medicating

Iron question and you ladies are so

helpful!!

You ladies are so wise about thyroid issues.

I finally saw an internist last week. She did give me a prescription

for Armour thyroid. She knew I was determined to stick with it, I

told her I was self-medicating with the generic Armour. She thought

that was a little out there.

Well anyway she ran about $300 worth of bloodwork to find out why I'm

still having some symptoms..mainly fatigue... Well guess what the

cause appears to be? The exact thing Janie and some others had told

me to get checked! My iron was 21 with a range of 40-200 and my

ferritin was 6.4 with a range of 15-150. The only reason she checked

that is my family has a history of too much iron, a thing called

hemachromatosis. I guess I don't have to worry about that.

Now I need to know if anyone has a good iron supplement to

recommend. She didn't suggest anything. I only received a letter

from her office telling me to start taking iron.

Her letter also stated that I'm 'significantly hyperthyroid' and to

call her office to talk about switching back to Synthroid or Levoxyl

with Cytomel... not a chance that I'm going back to that. Besides,

she gave me a prescription for a year of Armour... and I know where

to get it on my own if need be! My TSH was .06 and my FT4 was 1 with

range of .8 to 1.8. And of course no FT3 was done.

I don't send a lot of messages, but this group has been so helpful to

me! You are so knowledgeable and I appreciate your sharing it with

the rest of us.

Any iron suggestiions would be appreciated.

that prescription iron looked good if free with your insurance, UNLESS you have

low b12. I have an in-born error that makes me have low folic acid not b-12. Do

you have all the levels on yourself? I am responding to Janie's, but I forget

the name of who started it. I also use cheap ferrous sulfate with vitamin c when

I take it.

My Wal-Mart sells it. The box is labeled Iron 65 mg, then below it says

Ferrous Sulfate 325mg. They are in a box not a bottle. Right now I take

two in the evening, three hours a part. I need to take three but my body

gets constipated. Six weeks ago my Ferritin was at 10. Does any one have

any input as to how often I should get it checked? I go in for a check up

in two weeks. Should I ask for it then? I know the articles say to get it

between 70-90.

Why couldn't you take a plant form of iron? I-X from Nature's Sunshine.

Other companies must have plant forms to offer.

Hi Sheila,

I would want to know how much I'm getting. I found this website

http://www.naturalhealthland.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=74&osCsid=\

f512cacef54bfd0fb4d8e7858e51cd7b

It says take 2 capsules with a meal three times daily. Well I can't do

that, iron and thyroid meds don't work well together. I take by Armour at

9am and 2 pm. Evening is the only time I can take this stuff.

Kate,

Since it is a plant form then it probably wouldn't cause problems with the

thyroid meds. I.e. it would be like eating more spinach. Just because the

recommended dosage is two caps with each meal doesn't mean that you would

have to take it that way. I wish I had more time to research this with

you. LOL does anyone know a rich person who would like to hire me to do

research on health issues???? LOL I like my job, but I would love that

kind of a job! As I am sure would many of us would!

If I can find someone who has more information on this I will be sure to

share.

recommended dosage is two caps with each meal doesn't mean that you would

have to take it that way. I wish I had more time to research this with

you. LOL does anyone know a rich person who would like to hire me to do

research on health issues???? LOL I like my job, but I would love that

kind of a job! As I am sure would many of us would!

If I can find someone who has more information on this I will be sure to

share.

Hi Sheila,

I don't know if it would or not. I also know that when you eat plants that

are high in iron you get less per serving than you do meats. Good dietary

sources of iron include red meat, beans, egg yolk, whole-grain products,

nuts, and seafood. Any how that still begs the question of how much is in

there. I don't have time right now to research it. I wish I had the money

too to hire someone to do that, or be hired to do it(from

home)! Anyhow, for right now, I'll keep taking what I am. I am going to

up the Vit C to help with the constipation. If anyone else has

info....share away!

Thanks,

I self treat, how will I know if I have a Iron or ferritin problem? I

had been on synthroid for 3 years ( underteated) and have been on

thought it went with my question). A person could go mental (I

should say more mental)trying to understand everything, sometimes

it's so overwhelming I feel like giving up!
