Tim:

Dr. Gross - he's located in Columbia, SC. For more

information, you may want to look at his web site at:

http://www.grossortho.com

That may answer some of your initial questions.

RC2K Dr. Gross 3/24/04

He's an orthopedic surgeon in South Carolina. He's one of several

surgeons in the US participating in trials of one of the two

resurfacing devices currently being tested in the United States. The

two resurfacing devices being evaluated in the US are the

Conserve Plus, manufactured by Medical Technology in Arlington,

Tennessee, and

the Corin Cormet 2000, manufactured by the Corin Group in the

United Kingdom. These devices are very similar in design with only

minor differences between them. They're both quite similar to the

" Birmingham Hip " resurfacing device, manufactured by Midland Medical

Technologies in the United Kingdom. The Birmingham Hip (or BHR, as it

is commonly referred to here) has been in use in Europe since the

early 1990s. It has the longest track record of any resurfacing

device, but it is not (yet) available in the US. This may change in

the next few years, because Midland was recently bought out and its

new owners have stated that they intend to pursue FDA approval for the

BHR. Resurfacing is relatively common in Europe, but is still

considered investigational in the US (although the Conserve Plus is

nearing FDA approval).

Where? I'm in Boulder.

I'll be getting a bilateral (both hips at once) resurfacing at the

Joint Replacement Institute in Los Angeles (Dr. Harlan Amstutz) in

13 days. I'll be back the evening of the 25th. Amstutz has done more

resurfacings than anyone else in the US, but there are a number of

very experienced surgeons who perform this procedure scattereed

throughout the US. They tend to be concentrated on the coasts, though.

Most of the US resurfacers have done a few hundred procedures by now.

Many people opt to have the surgery done in Europe, where there are

surgeons who have done literally thousands of resurfacings and the

cost of resurfacing is about half of that in the US.

It varies. I personally know someone who didn't require any post-op

pain control once the epidural was removed. I don't expect that to be

true for me, particularly since I'm having a bilateral. I'll let you

know in a few weeks. ;-)

They're all quite similar. The BHR has a wider range of sizes and also

has a special " dysplasia cup " available for those with severe hip

dysplasia. You will, however, have to go out of the country (the UK

and Belgium are particular favorites) to get it.

Tim,

Many of us here like our respective surgeons and are very happy with our

implants. I recently began my seventh year on my first C+ and have no

restrictions and never any pain – tennis, skydiving, biking, weight training

– you name it. You need to look into your specific insurance coverage

unless you’re planning to pay out-of-pocket. Many insurance carriers don’t

cover ‘investigational’ devices like the C+ and Cormet metal-on-metal hip

resurfacing implants. The surgeon’s office staff can usually tell you who

covers it and who doesn’t. Hospital stays are typically 4 days and many

patients spend an additional night at a local hotel before making a long

trip home. Add at least a couple of days if you get both hips done at once.

Post-op pain varies widely. I’m fortunate, as I never had any pain after

day 1. I went into surgery in pretty good shape and think that helped as

much as did making the right decision on a surgeon.
