building bone density

I'm wondering what the best exercises are for building hip bones. Mr.

Treacy seemed to think walking would help, but maybe that's not enough? How

about walking up steep hills so you get a good burn going and really pump

your legs? And if it is really the jarring impact that you need to

strengthen bones, like running and jumping, then how could it help to sit or

lie on a machine and do leg extensions and ham string curls? I do these

too, also leg lifts with ankle weights. But I'd like to do more of the

things that are best for building bones, if I knew what they were. Any

ideas?

Another question I have is, how can you tell if your hip bone is getting

stronger? I believe they usually measure the lower spine when they do

density tests, and it was my understanding that you can't read the bone

density under the metal implant, but some of you have said your surgeons

told you your density had improved. How did they know?

There are other dietary consideratiions too, besides calcium. You have

to have the right amount of magnesium in order to absorb calcium. The ratio

recommended is 2 parts calcium to 1 part magnesium. The problem with dairy

foods is that though they're high in calcium they have very little

magnesium. Nuts and seeds have a lot, as well as green leafy vegetables,

brown rice and seafood. Vitamin D is important too. And eat your tofu,

girls, remember it has phytoestrogens!

Thanks Dawn!

I've been to the Bill website and will try out his workout plan.

I've been lifting weights for years, but it's always good to change the

pattern and try different plans. It gets you charged up and keeps things

interesting.

And I'm really glad to hear you don't have to hammer away at the bone and

jar your joints, as I don't feel it would be wise for me.

Best,

Heidi
