Guest guest
Marie: After I left the hospital I took 2 Vicodin - one for the (8 hour) ride home and one that night. I didn't like the way it made me feel so I didn't take anymore. I took Tylenol off and on for about a week. I haven't used anything since. Guest guest
Marie: Oh, one thing I forgot - I was supposed to be on Celebrex after the surgery - I took it for a few days and broke out in hives - apparently I'm allergic to sulfa compounds. That's when I reverted to just Tylenol. Fortunately, I didn't have much pain to deal with. Guest guest
Hi , I'm also allergic to Sulfa (I couldn't tolerate even Bextra which has less Sulfa in it than Celebrex). I've been through all the other NSAIDs, Mobic, Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Vioxx and finally Voltaren (this is the only one that seems to help, but maybe everything helped a little, I've been afraid to stop them. In fact, I think I have only missed 1 or 2 doses all year. I'm thankful that I haven't developed any GI or other complications from them. I'm very careful They say that the only NSAID I can take right before surgery is Vioxx, so I just went back on this today. I can't wait until like you, I'm off of everything. I want to be comfortable enough to do the PT and start exercising again. Guest guest
Hi Marie, I had my hip resurfed in April 04, & I haven't needed drugs since. I used to take 2400 MG of Ibuprofen at a time before my surgery. I took vicodin the night I came home (day 4) because I didn't sleep a wink in the hospital, and I thought it would help me sleep. But it just made me feel creepy and depressed, so I stopped with just that one experience. I did sleep though.... My hip doesn't hurt one bit. I don't have any pain at all where there used to be so much. In fact, now that I think about it, I woke up from surgery with no pain. And even when they got me up to walk on day 2 it didn't hurt, it just felt wierd and week. Don't sweat it...you'll be fine. The morphine and the epidural get you through day one and 2, and after that it aint so bad. At least that was my experience. Bood luck with you surgery and keep us posted! Guest guest
Marie: I think every person has had a different experience concerning pain meds before and certainly after surgery. I had to stop taking all anti-inflamatories 2 weeks prior to surgery. I never needed another prescription for one again and I was truly happy to stop taking them. Prior to surgery, over a 4 year time period, I had tried Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra. Bextra had worked the best. What a joy to stop needing them! Like you, I get sick on Vicodan and Codiene. They both make me throw up. I also had an adverse reaction to the Morphine and threw that up as well. After the nausea wore off I didn't take any of those pain killers. Instead, I took some Darvocet, which is a low-key pain-killer that I tolerate very well. It's not as strong as the " heavy hit " narcotics, but it worked quite well for me. I took that on and off for 1 week, then switched to Tylenol. I only took the Darvocet at night. If you want to see if you can tolerate this, ask your local Doc for a few tabs and try 1/2 a tab at night. If you tolerate it (they're mild compared to most), then keep it in mind for use after surgery. Best of luck to you! Keep us posted. Lois C+ 3/27/03 Dr. Mont How much post-op pain medication did you hipsters need? Can you experienced hipsters tell me, honestly, how much and how long did you take pain meds after surgery? If you don't have arthritis anywhere else, was there any reason to continue taking NSAIDs after the hip was fixed? How about Glucosamine? I'm getting my hip resurfaced in August. I have really never had anything else wrong with me of any significance. In past when I had some minor injury or oral surgery, I was given both Vicodan and Codiene, but both made me throw up. The pain specialist I saw last year when my hip was bothering me a lot, gave me some Demerol to take if the pain interfered with my sleep, etc. In one year I've only taken 7 doses (of course I've been continuously on NSAIDS and Cosamin DS). I guess they can give me an anti-emetic with the narcotic, but I don't want to be a zombie. Marie

Guest guest
Chris- Your message was very encouraging! I have been told that my hip Xray looks " like crap " , so I'm surprised that I'm not in even more pain at this point. I'm still able to work. I just can't budge the bed w/o getting " stabbed " . I also don't like putting on my left sock/shoe. I have always thought of myself as a " wimp " when it comes to pain (although I did ok w/natural childbirth, which amazed me!). Maybe I don't have as many nerve endings in my hip as some people do. I'm hoping that I'll be as fortunate as you when it comes to the need for pain relievers. I'll keep you posted!
