Hi,

I'm new on this Group as I have just received the book by Peggy

on both THR V Re-surfacing. My research seems to steer me

towards the latter.

I understand that Belgium is a very popular place to have the

procedure done and I am looking towards there. For one hip re-

surfacing can anyone give me an indication on how much it would

cost - and how to get things rolling in Belgium. You can quote US$,

Euro, Pound Sterling - I will convert.

Hi,

At the clinic of Dr De Smet total cost is 10,500 Euro for one hip

for 4 days in hospital then you have to pay on top for 5/7 days at

the Holiday Inn at 85 Euros a day inc. nursing and physio.

G'day ,

I'm less than five years but I'm more than two, well two and a half.

Anyway just to say that resurf was an option for me and also so was

THR, I didn't know until I woke up from the op, and it was a bhr and

I was well pleased. Because I was convinced due to my age (35then)

that I would be a fair chance for multi revisions later on at least

this way I've conserved a bit of bone for future ops if need be.

Anyway thats a view from an east coaster.

I am at 4.5 years and have not regretted getting resurfacing for a

minute. Let me know if you want more detail or advice.

For longer experience look in the files section for " longtermsurf "

(or similar) there are people out there very happy at ten years.

Hi ,

Greetings as a fellow Aussie......... you will find there are quite a few

emails back not far from people out to 10 years.........though we don't get

many appearing here once they get their new hips - they obviously get too

busy with life.........

Over Sydney way they are far more progressed these days and getting on with

it - I personally know 3 people from here who are into their 4th year with

one - they flew all the way from FNQ to get one in Sydney......... as did I

a year later............. so mine is almost 2 now........... So sorry it

has been done in Australia now for over 5 years I think - if not 6 (I lose

track of time)........... and it is very very hard to find anyone with a bad

experience to date....... and for the small area I live in, it is surprising

how many have turned up...........i.e. word gets around and people end up

voting with their hips even if they have to fly from FNQ to Sydney to get

one.........smile. It has been done in UK for far longer...........so there

is now a fair bit of history building up and some of these people do all

sorts of incredible things with their hips........ the rest of us are only

stopped by problems in the rest of the body........ smile.

I was 53 when a wonderful doctor in Sydney chipped my fused hip apart and

put a BHR on it......... It made so much more sense as it doesn't interfer

with the bone so much........... I had a history of osteomylitis........ and

dislocations are near impossible - I had dreadfully atrophied muscles from

35 years of fusion........... Last time I saw him he just said that BHR are

becoming the norm to do for anyone who has good enough bone stock and then

you simply do whatever variety of THR for those who are not.......... He is

considered close to the leading hip surgeon, if not the leading hip surgeon

in NSW.......

Hope that is helpful..........

: My husband and I are going to be staying at the Hyatt in Melbourne

(later, the Hyatt in Sydney) in early August. Would love to meet an Australian

surfacehippy or two while down under.

I haven't made the 5 year mark yet, but am at 4+ right hip and 3.5 +

left hip. I can do everything I want to without any pain (including

gym workouts + golf + some tennis + plenty of long walks + gardening)

I am now 56, and my advice would be if you are a candidate for re-

surfacing go for it.

Hey Maureen...are you from Manhattan...as in NY? CA? NZ/AUS? :o)

My friend isn't a " hippy, " that's why I didn't expand much on

this post 'cuz it wasn't really " hippy " related! He's a friend I met

in Ireland during my travelling days (15 years ago +/-) and we've

managed to keep in touch over the years...he has visited the

States...I visited Australia. His name is ... email me and I

can give ya more details! Heck, maybe we can hook ya up w/ a deal at

the Hyatt! My email's hippylak@... Till soon,
