Guest guest
Dang Barb, I know you want your Dad! I'm glad it's improving quickly though. Do you and Kerry do the energy on each other? My hip went out a couple weeks ago, I know the pain was unbearable for a day, then just like yours, started to improve. I'll be talking to your dad. ...... distance makes no matter. Cindylouwho Barb's Hip I have been rather quiet the past day or so because I went and hurt myself when Dad wasn't around to fix it. Kerry and I took Sherlock to the beach on Sunday afternoon. I wore cheap sandals so I could wade in the water with the dog. We splashed around and ran and played and had a great time. Then, back on the beach and out of the water, I came across a patch of seaweed. I walked through it instead of around it and ended up slipping on the slimy stuff. I fell face first into the sand and seaweed. I called Sherlock over to help me up. He stood still and let me use his shoulders to push myself up, then we walked over to the water so I could clean the seaweed off my legs. Kerry was busy scooping the poop Sherlock had recently made, so he wasn't exactly available to help. As soon as he could, he took Sherlock's leash so I could survey the damage. No bruises, no cuts, no red marks, and only some minor pain in the hip area. About 4 hours later, after chatting on IM for awhile, I noticed that the hip was really sore. When I tried to get up, I realized it was EXTREMELY sore. Spent the evening resting it and Kerry got me a cane. By bedtime, the pain was really bad and I couldn't lay down, straighten my leg, or even roll over without pain. Kerry helped me get dressed - I couldn't reach my feet at that point - and took me to the hospital. We waited 3 hours at the hospital (2 in the waiting room and 1 in the ER room) before I ever got to see a nurse. Sometime around 2:30 in the morning they sent me in for X-Rays. Just positioning the leg was excruciating. The X-rays didn't show any sublux or broken bones, but it did show old calcification in the joint. The doctor assumed the calcification in the left hip was because it was the more unstable of the two hips and had probably had damage from repeated subluxing. They gave me codeine in the hospital and sent me home with the recommendation to follow up with my regular doctor and to see about having surgery later to tighten up the joint. I told him surgery was NOT an option I was willing to consider, so he walked out shaking his head. The doctor also didn't want to prescribe codeine because he read some study that said it wasn't as effective as the other drugs he wanted to give me. I told him the other drugs made me vomit and that was the last thing I needed with a bad hip. He insisted on giving me Percocet and an anti-nausea medicine, but I refused. I explained that codeine has worked well for me since I was 9 years old and I was not about to change things now. He gave in and wrote the Rx for what I wanted and sent me home. We finally got back home around 5 a.m. Monday morning. I spent almost all day Monday either asleep on the couch or asleep in bed with lots of leg pillows. I had 2 codeine at the hospital and 3 more at home on Monday throughout the day. By Monday night, I was starting to be able to walk with less pain and could actually move my leg into a comfortable sleeping position. I stayed home from work today to rest and recover and by noon today it had gotten much better. There is still pain, but now it is only if I take long steps or sit in certain positions. It's much better than it was yesterday. This was the worst acute-pain incident I have had in years, but fortunately it didn't last long. More often I get the generalized pain that is tolerable, but annoying and it lasts for days and weeks. -Barb To learn more about EDS, visit our website: http://www.ehlersdanlos.ca
Guest guest
Barb - so sad to hear about your pain. However, I want to applaud the way you stuck up for yourself!! Way to go girl! The one and only time I took codine I basically passed out - woke up to vomit and then passed out again. Guess it's a good thing I don't take any of the other stuff. Now I have even more reason not, too. Ugh. Hope you continue to get better!

Most docs are shocked that it doesn't make me sick as sensitive as I am to everything else. VITAMINS have made me vomit before. Pretty much pills of any kind are not my friends. The last thing I needed was to be in that kind of pain AND start throwing up. I know more about EDS and my needs than any fool ER doctor knows and I won't let them tell me what is best for me when I know better. -Barb Feeling pretty good now! I'll send you prayers and healing energy, as I know that's what your Dad would say to do, right?? Get better, and take it easy! Guest guest
Barb; Sorry to hear about your problem with your hip. I know how frustrating that must be to go in and have it checked and have so few options. I don¹t know if this will help you or not. I have pain with one hip that goes down into the front of the leg; nothing seems to help. But I have found that sitting on this mat will at least ease the pain for the time that I am in the tub. I will use it several times a day when it gets really bad. You probably have something like this -- and as you know; it is entirely probable that we are discussing two different hip issues. Just thought I would throw it out there for whatever it is worth http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005A44E/103-0391407-0531005 ?v=glance Conair MBTS3 Thermal Spa Bathmat Bubble Massager Features: 300 vents produce swirls of water, warm bubbles, converting bathtub to spa * Fits any standard-size tub; 9-foot flexible tube runs from power unit to mat * Rubber cushion can be positioned on mat for comfort * High or low bubbling action; outside bubble tubes or all four tubes can be used * Mat 39-1/2 by 12-1/4 inches; folds to 12-1/4-by-13-by-5-inch package for storage On 7/27/04 9:39 PM, " ceda " ceda > wrote: > > Subject: Barb's Hip > > I stayed home from work today to rest and recover and by noon today it had > gotten much better. Guest guest
Yikes and Owch Barb!!! :-S I'm so glad that you are 'OK' now. Sorry things got so bad you had to go to the ER and have one of 'those' doctors to boot :-( Both my hips are unstable but the right frequently likes to slip out at often the most inconvienent times. The last time happening after I got off a toliet at a Tim Hortons. Sure made a funny scene in that washroom wincing, 'aaahing' quietly and pushing at my thigh. I'm sorry your holiday ended on that note :-( Way to go with having Sherlock there and ready to give you a good brace to get up!!! :-D Sending you ((((HUGS)))) and feel better wishes -Rhea

Still, when he is not hurting himself, he does many of his service dog jobs for me if needed. He stuck by me most of the time while I was hurting. On Monday, his knees were sore and Kerry said we looked like twins with our matching gimpy walk and laying down the same way. -Barb
