I must say I felt no discomfort in either my resurfaced hip (L) or the assumed

healthy ® one. I did feel however the pressure in both my knees when exiting

the sea – I was wearing a 5mm suit, all the standard diving paraphernalia,

6.5kg of lead weight (I weigh about 83 kg), and had to climb up about 1.2m of

vertical metal stairs to reach the quay/wharf floor in a small fishing port.

However, once out I could continue walking to the diving club which involved

traversing the quay (about 20m) and climbing up 2 flights of stone steps (about

30 steps lifting me about 6m high) to reach the entrance to the club.

Obviously, on the way to the sea I felt no pain/pressure whatsoever as I was

descending the stairs to the quay and I jumped into the sea.

So, no problem in hip area. The diving itself is, in my opinion, a useful and

healthy exercise for my legs and hip(s). However, if you do feel pain/pressure

I suggest you have cylinder (“bottleâ€) carried by a ‘buddy’ to the edge

where you will eventually ‘enter’ the sea/water and you taker the BCJ

(“jacketâ€) off in the water/sea before exiting (it can then be picked up by

a ‘buddy’ on shore or into the diving boat. It may be worthwhile practicing

putting the BCJ, with the cylinder strapped on, on and off while in the

sea/water – there is a technique as to how to do that safely and correctly

that your diving instructor or a Master Diver could teach you.

I have a similar concern to Val re weight bearing. I'm a big guy,

dive maybe 2 or 3 times a year and always in a 5mm wetsuit, because

of the cold. Coming out of the water, I'm carrying a lot of

weight...did you feel any vulnerability in the new hip between when

you emerged from the water until you took your gear off? (BTW I've

only been diving for a couple of years).

Thanks

Tony

†" max depth about 39m, average depth about 27m, length of dive

40+min. No problems whatsoever. Thought that left-right balance

might be affected due to approx. half-a-kilo of metal alloys in my

left hip, but I dived without any unintentional rotation. Last week

I took out 3 divers for a refresher dive and demonstrated all the

balance / float control positions without any hindrance. I’d say

that my movement through water has improved since the resurfacing

(not surprising, as my movement above water has improved dramatically

as well).
