Guest guest
Marie Since I've been on this site (3 years) there have been a largish number of resurfacing done with AVN patients. It depends on the state of your bone structure whether or not you'll get an OS to give you resurfacing. As I'm sure there will be replies from people with first hand knowledge, I'll bow out but I'll repeat that you were not told the truth. Rog BHR both hips 2001 Ronan Treacy Ok, but how long does resurfacing last with AVN? > Hi again, I wrote that original question about how long resurfacing > lasts. Guest guest
I would think it would be almost impossible to predict - it would depend on how " bad " it was, how fast it was progressing . . . lots of factors. Guest guest
Marie, I was told by one orthopod that AVN (osteonecrosis) is the only condition that he would recommend hemi-surface but without the acetabular cap. Also the JRI " Manual for Prospective Patients " refers to it on pg 7. You are on the right track by doing the research and asking the questions. Guest guest
Hey Marie! I'm 51, pre-surgery, and have basically already been through everything you're going through right now. My question is this...are you absolutely sure you have AVN? Have you had an MRI? I ask this because my original x-rays suggested AVN (and I worried and worried about it) but a follow-up MRI and follow up x-rays proved that I did NOT have AVN. Apparently it was just a shadow on that first x-ray. ...even so, I'll chime in with all the others on this site...I've heard of many folks who have had re-surf's with AVN. Guest guest
Marie, I definitely did have AVN before my resurf in March of 2002 with DeSmet. It did not show up on the X-Rays, but when he opened me up he found a fairly bad case--- probably the result of high doses of oral prednisone I had to take for an asthma condition. Anyway, Dr. DeSmet went ahead with the resurf. He commented at the time that some surgeons might have gone with a THR after seeing the status of my femur, but that he felt confident a resurf would work. He told me that the AVN should not pose any long term problems since it was a problem only at the end of the femur and that part had been removed-- giving me the impression that AVN is a localized disorder and doesn't " regrow " once it has been removed. I hope this is the case. One point I must add is that in recent weeks I have felt some tightness and discomfort in my hip. (I posted about this) I have an appointment for next Thursday with a local orthopod to get some X- Rays which I will send to Dr. D. Hopefully there is nothing wrong, but I will post what is found. Guest guest
I have AVN and had a resuface on 3/5/04. There was a definite collapse, but they were still able to do the resurface. So far, so good. Beaule C+ 3/5/04 > Hi again, I wrote that original question about how long resurfacing > lasts.
