Alan, ol' buddy,

Having been through my own trial-by-fire with CIGNA, you have my

sympathy. When you get through this mess, there's a flamethrower

waiting for you. ;-)

Pamela,

The issue is not one of desire, nor, really allegiance to Dr. Amstutz

and JRI. It's economic necessity. The only way I can afford to have

the surgery done ... if CIGNA pays nothing... is to take out a loan.

I have the offers, but that's a lot of money to borrow...and payback

for a long time. Not that I have any question it would be worth it;

just that that's a huge amount of personal debt. (And sadly, my

coverage is employer-sponsored -- as part of a group coverage plan.

If I chose another plan, I'd have to pay entirely out of pocket...and

that's about $600 a month.)

I'll keep you apprised of developments.

It's notes from people like you (and beginning with Peggy )

that make ask myself when I wake some mornings...why not just go to

Ghent and get it done? The morning that I have the answer may dawn

sooner than I expect.

Thanks,

Alan

That's exactly what I did. A couple of months before the surgery, I

took out a HELOC (Home Equity Line of Credit) with a maximum credit

line of $85,000.00. I was fully prepared to go to Belgium if I had to,

or even to pay JRI in cash. Unfortunately, not everyone has the means

to do that.

Same situation for me - and of course if you get private insurance on

your own, they can refuse to cover pre-existing conditions. At least

we're not among the 43 million Americans who have no health coverage

at all.

I'll keep the flamethrower fueled and ready to go.
