Guest guest
Hi Grace, Don't be embarrassed, we all poop, don't we??? He-he... I was just saying to somebody the other day, that we sounded like two old ladies in some nursing home, talking about stool softeners and other things that would help constipation... Anyway, I thought I should real quickly add my NOk .50 worth... One thing is to do something about the acute problem, another thing is to do some things in your every day life to prevent it from rearing it's ugly head all the time... Prevention is the best way to go!!! Right now, you just need to get some help to get going really good, I guess. I did not read the other posts, but saw that Cindy mentioned Miralax. That is obviously one thing. I tried it myself this summer in the US, don't even know if we have it here in Norway. It did get things moving a bit for me, but I felt dreadful, I was so nauseated and felt really yucky. I could barely eat for days. I do suspect that the Miralax was the cause of some of the discomfort, even if constipation can cause that kind of problems too. But nausea is listed as a side effect of Miralax, I found out (afterwards, of course)... What I find more effective for myself, is Lactulose. There's no known side effects beside that it can cause gas and such, normally just at the very beginning when you start using it. Laculose is not a laxative, it is just a stool softener, and you can use it every day for as long as you want, there is no problems connected with that as there is with laxatives. It seems to be somewhat similar to Miralax in that it is a sugar, but it is not the same. Here in Norway you can buy Lactulose OTC, don't know how it is in the US though. If you take too much, it can cause diarrhea too, but then you just adjust your dosage. What you normally do when you are in a situation like you are now, you take a higher dosage for around 4 days (directions on the bottle, it is a liquid), then you use a lower dosage from there, normally a bit every day when you are on meds for chronic pain. Other important things to prevent constipation are: - Get lots of fiber in your diet!!! Eat whole grain breads, fruits and veggies etc. every day! Dark bread for your sandwiches, and snacking at raw fruit and veggies in between meals, is really good and healthy for you too!!! - If you don't get enough fiber, e.g. you eat white bread, buy fiber pills and take them every day ( pills of pure fiber with no laxatives or anything added, just wheat or fruit fiber). A few before each meal is a great idea... I tried finding these at Walmart/K-mart once in the US, but only found some really light colored ones that really didn't look much like fiber, they also had laxatives in them. Those are not what you want. Maybe asking at a health food store is better? What you want is the stuff that smells like, and almost looks like, dry kibble rabbit and guinea pig food, LOL!!! Brown pills where you can see the dried fiber... Buying wheat bran and adding it to yoghurt, is also good, so it e.g. Kellogs All Bran cereal, if you are more into cereal than bread e.g. for breakfast. But, if you aren't into eating darker bread, e.g. you prefer white toast bread (or you are just into a period where you are bored of dark bread), fiber pills are great. When you choose bread, e.g. the breads they recommend for people using diets like the Atkinds-diet, are just great. And they taste so much better than white bread too, you can eat it without anything on it, it tastes so good!!! - If your tummy can handle it, drink lots of Orange Juice (I find that very helpful). I am sure other fruit juices are good too, but I just love OJ and it works!!! I only get 100% OJ, not any of those thinned with water and sweetened ones... Those doesn't work well. If your tummy can't take much OJ, just drink as much as you can take, and get fiber from other sources as well. You can't get too much fiber, I think... - If you like it and don't worry about the calories, eat prunes and raisins as snacks - gets things going... - If you are really constipated, eating chewing gum and sweets with Xylitol can help. E.g. eat one pack of gum by chewing one until the taste is going, then taking a new one etc. Or eat a pack of the gelly-like candies with Xylitol. But be careful, it can really make things move fast... Some of the candies even have a warning on them " Excessive use can cause diarrhea " ... I got a bit of a kick of one of these candies years ago, they were so good. I soon found out that pigging out eating two packs wasn't too good an idea though... LOL - Last but not least: Drink lots of fluids!!!! At least 2-3 liters a day (which would be around 5-8 pints, I guess). Way too many people does not drink enough!!! Normally I actually drink around 4-5 liters a day, even if I am not too good at drinking pure water, there's after all water in other things too. I think it is more important to get enough fluids into yourself than limiting your drinking because you don't like pure water. But that is of course just my personal opinion... In my every day life I drink lots of tea, orange juice, green tea with lime ice tea and of course my favorite Coke (I'm the chief Cokeaholic)! He-he... E.g. At work I will normally have 1 liter of orange juice for lunch and after lunch. Before and after that I have both tea and some coke, so altogether I have at least 2 liters of fluid before 2-3 p.m. When I don't get that much fluids, I am in trouble, so I think getting enough fluids, is really important when it comes to not being constipated when you are on these meds. And if you live somewhere where the weather is hot too, it gets even more important... But if you always have a bottle or tumbler of something you like there, and sip at it all the time, drinking lots isn't that difficult. I really feel that my body feels so much better when I drink that much, not only because of constipation... If you also like drinking water, that is wonderful!!! If you don't like water, I can recommend making ice tea of green tea, it is really refreshing. I either buy tea bags of green tea with lemon, or the plain one and add some lime to it afterwards - or I buy concentrate which only needs water added. But if you take the little work it is to " make a big batch " of home made green ice tea, it is really cheap and yummy!!! There's really no need to buy those expensive bottles of ice tea... A good alternative if you want to have a bit of variation, is all those green and ordinary tea's with all sorts of natural fruit flavor added... I'm sure I forgot some of the things I normally use now. It becomes sort of " old habit " and you end up doing it without even thinking... Hope some of this can be useful for you though... Take care!!! Good night, Aase Marit (hitting the sack now, Peanut tells me it is time to go nighty-night!!! She's the boss, he-he) >I know most, if not ALL of us in on some kind of pain medication. >I've noticed that many of these meds cause, constipation. Guest guest
Oh my gosh that happens to me too! I get terrible head aches to begine with. I take Flexural for them when I get them. " Pushing " when I try to go makes my head hurt so bad and sometime I feel like I'm going to black out. UGH. Thanks for the help!!!! All of have to deal with icky things and if we don't ask it can be hard to get answers. I've struggled with it a lot with my pain meds, i now take an over the counter generic stool softener 3 times a day with my narcotics and things are much easier. I think the hardest times for me have been right after my surgeries to the neck and head becuase they cut through all those muscles it hurts to do any pushing, plus with me pushing causes headaches. Pushing is known as a valsalva maneuver and in my case anything like that causes awful headaches so it was very difficult to go and i would get very backed up so to speak. I wish you the best of luck,

Guest guest
Hi Grace, There's no such thing as an embarrassing question amongst this family Sweetie. Sadly we have to cope with the not so easy to talk about stuff along the way and it's only be talking about things and discussing them that we find answers, solutions and ease our fears that we're not the only ones going through it too! As for the constipation issue, I just wanted to warn you to be careful about using any of the stool softening medications etc.especially if you are prone to over reacting to medications. I was given an equivalent to Miralax a few years ago, but because of my small size and body wieght, I over reacted to it causing swelling and bleeding in the bowel, which was very painful. I now have to be very careful with dosages of stool softening meds and certain ingredients are a complete no-no for me. So would advise you to check out options with your Dr and make sure you can be monitored. Hope you can find a solution soon Darl. Thinking of you. Love and hugs....Jo xx
