Hey Carol! Check the archives...we've discussed MIS before on these

boards. Personally, I'd like my OS to be able to see what he/she is

doing! Susie in Memphis

Thanks Susie, I will. I am a nurse and I agree that visualization is a great

part of a successful surgery. My friend who had resurfacing about 6 years ago

has kind of freaked me out talking about the problems she has had with the

tissue trauma - joint is fine but lots of problems with the huge incision and

muscles, fascia not returning to normal - so thought I'd check out the MIS

procedure. Really do not want to leave the US so...

Hi Carol

There is also minimal invasive resurfacing with one incision instead of

2.

My name is Dave and I am the resident Representative on this board. MIS

is the current trend in orthopaedic surgery. It promises a less invasive

proceedure that should translate into faster recovery times. Some surgeons use

one, two, or even three smaller incisions compared to the larger one most are

familiar with.

The negative is that these proceedures are still in the " working the bugs out "

phase of their exsistance. In many cases, the current instrumentation " tools "

are not configured in a way to fit this MIS concept.

In short, talk to your surgeon and express your concerns. I know that Dr. Mont

here in Baltimore has done some resurfacings through a single three inch

incision. I also know that it made the proceedure a bit more difficult because

of the tight space.

Best wishes.

My incision was nowhere close to 12 " - it's about 6 " . And I'm a big

guy (6' 2 " 260 lbs) with a big Cormet 2000 (48mm/54mm).

Well, that certainly sounds better than 12 " . My friend had resurfacing done

at JRI about 5 years ago and said she had a L shaped incision that was about 6 "

across and 6 " down.

Dear Dave

Thank you so much for your reply. I talked with JRI and they say " no way " to

MIS. I'm sure one day (probably soon) this will be the " gold standard " but

don't think I can wait that long. Would rather have big incision and

resurfacing than MIS and THR!! Hopefully after reviewing my films and MRI -

that will be my option : )
