Ya know how you get an email and you get pictures? Then sometimes you get a

blank box with a red X in it where the picture is suppose to be? Is there a

setting I can change? (I have XP and outlook express.) I'm missing out on seeing

allot of cute stuff It happens on jokes allot. Anybody know?

Hi Cindy

That box with the red X means that the picture is unavailable. This

can happen for a few reaons actually.

a) The image wasnt properly attached or has 'come loose' through

forwarding. This can happen if one person forwards the message but

forgot to send the picture as well.

B) If the picture was a link to a webpage, it could be because the

person running the website has removed that picture so the e-mail

can not 'find' the image.

c) The server is too busy. If the server is too busy it may just

allow you to access the text as it doesnt take as long to transfer.

You may get the email completely in but the transfer takes a bit

longer. You can try right clicking on the box then select 'show

picture'. It may or may not be shown after this.

d) Do you get other attachments or do NO attachments come through?

You might have your anti-virus software or firewall settings really

high so that no attachments are allowed. It sounds like you are

getting some attachments though so that shouldnt be the problem.

e) Or the image may be in a file format that your computer doesnt

recognize. I could send someont lots of files that I have done but

they would be worthless if the other person didnt have the program

to open them up in.

f) Finally, your anti-virus software may be viewing the attachment

as corrupted or 'dirty' and may be infected with a virus so it will

not open it. If it is 'suspicious' in anyway most new anti-virus

software will quarantine things even if they are 'safe'.

There are so many things that can happen with computers that even

one of these things may not be the reason for your problem. Most

computer run email (such as Outlook, Eudora, etc..) does check this

fairly good but does run into problems like finding the right

program to open the file with. I definitly prefer web-based email

as you cant get viruses as easily as with comp based because if the

email or the email's attachment has a virus you wont be able to open

or execute the file. Also to me it just seems safer. Opps kinda a

little off topic there lol.

Hope that one of these reasons will help you and maybe help. Feel

free to ask again if none work :) I am more than ready to take on

the job of 'list comp girl' as I have a 'slight' knowledge of

computers lol. That is if you count a Honours Bachelor of Science

in Computer Science and a Minor in Mathematics (sorry, slightly

bragging :) )

Thanks , I'll write you off board tomorrow to see If I can figure this out,

and after I look at some of the thing you mention (at least the ones I

understand )

Don't want to bore the board with my PC stuff. Thank you so much for trying to

help with this!
