Hi Joe,

Well it's good news that your wait is over! I am just 3 weeks and 3

weeks after my surgery and I can't believe how well it has gone. Be

encouraged, I was more worried about the recovery than the op, but

my progress has been boringly routine!

I had a fairly difficult operation and had a BHR on one hip, but

within a week I was walking 400m and now I do 4 x 600m repetitions

daily, not like some of the super athletes on this site but I am

very happy. I am on two crutches for 6 weeks, but already the

swelling has gone, the incision is nicely healed, and my limp is

significantly reduced. Also down to a couple of paracetemols to get

me going in the morning!

The only downsides I experienced were the rolling by the nurses to

wash your back, before you got out of bed...a big incentive to get

up, and lots of stiffness until about 20 days but even that is going

now. Within 6 hours of surgery I was fully awake and and no

anaesthetic after effects.

So best wishes to you, it is a big thing, I had never been in

hospital before ( 48 years) but found the whole thing positive and

constructive....so to speak! So best wishes, and I wish you well.

Hi Joe

I just went for my 5 week check up today and I can't emphasise

enough about how 'normal' I feel. I'm in no pain at all, and haven't

been since a week post op. My incision has healed and on Saturday I

walked over 2 miles (in 2 separate journeys and on crutches) and

felt fighting fit afterwards.

I'm a big chicken when it comes to hospital stuff but I promise you

the whole experience was fine - not one I'd like to repeat in a

hurry but I wouldn't be scared at the prospect of going and doing it

all over again!

Cheers

Dear Joe, Worry no more!!! I was the biggest wimp of all. I worried

about every thing most of it really silly( will I be able to wash my

hair as an example!!).

I stayed awake the night before my surgery and drove the nurses

crazy! I was told by all the other hippies it would be ok and though

I did believe them and through them was brave enough to go ahead I

still worried! But It truly is not as bad as you think. I woke up

with 100% less pain the pre op. I had never had surgery before and

with my hand on my heart I can tell you if I had to do it again I

would not worry like I did this time.

Take care Cheryl

Joe:

I am approaching 2 weeks post op and I feel great. You would be

crazy if you weren't anxious about having surgery. I can tell you

that the anticipation was much worse than the event!!

On the day of Sx, they placed a catheter in my hand (bee sting) then

injected local anesthetic into my back to place the epidural (slight

burning sensation)......then I woke up in recovery.....that was it!!

The first 24 hours is uncomfortable....not painful, just the sense

that something is wrong. The first time you stand up after surgery,

it feels a little strange because the muscles that had to be

divided / cut are not healed enough to support your weight. However,

the strength of my joint is increasing each day. The arthritis pain

was COMPLETELY GONE immediately after surgery.....a miracle.

I can tell you that I am absolutely convinced that I made the right

choice with this procedure. Look past the surgery and think about

all of the things you'll be able to do again in a few

months.....that should ease some of the anxiety.

Joe: I am so glad to hear that the docs are getting on with this

surgery here in Vancouver. There are now a few people who have been

surfed here and I can only say it's about time.

As for the surgery, Duncan is one of the best hip guys and VGH is a

very good hospital. All will be well and you will be without pain

and moving freely before you know it. My surgery was 21 months ago

in Belgium and the minute I woke up I knew the pain was gone. Life

has been wonderful ever since and what is really amazing me is that I

continue to get more range of motion all the time. One of my fellow

ice dancers remarked that she couldn't believe how high my leg was the

other day - neither could I and I wasn't even trying!!!!

Just be prepared to get on with life in a few days!!!

Hello Pamela,

Thanks for your encouraging comments.

I am glad that your pain is gone and that you now have complete range of

motion and that you are doing all the activities you could not do prior to

your surgery.

I am a little scared but feel comfortable with my upcoming surgery.'

With respect to Duncan, it took me about a year to convince him to agree to

perform resurfacing procedure on my hip. Now the 4 Doctors in his office are

performing a couple of resurfacing surgeries per week.

Regards,

Joe

Joe all of those docs are getting more comfortable with the surgery

and in fact, although we don't need it yet, both Cliff and I are

checking in regularly with Masri so that if we need the other hips

done we won't be at the bottom of the list .... however if the time

arrives that we want it done and we still have a long wait we will not

hesitate to go back to De Smet - unless he has retired rich and

exhausted by then!!! I understand that Greidanus is also

participating in study about the effects of waiting until you can't

stand it anymore. I know that study has already been done somewhere

and there is reference to it in past posts here. It seems obvious to

me that while there is always an element of risk to surgery and the

effects later on, waiting until we can't stand it anymore simply

causes so much other stuff happening to your body that waiting that

long is simply the wrong thing to do. I don't suggest getting surgery

at the first sign of pain, but getting to the point of constant pain,

limping, contorting the body and doing god knows what to our insides

with drugs is not right either.

anyway, stay strong and keep us posted.
