Calcium supplements after resurfacing?

Hi

This question is for all you post-menopausal ladies, especially

the ones with osteoporosis. How long after resurfacing were you

allowed to resume your calcium supplements? I took Plavix for six

weeks post-op to help prevent HO (extra bone growth on the femur), and

I've been off my calcium supplements since two weeks before the

operation. Now I'm 5 1/2 months post-op, and I'm noticing some low

calcium problems, so I'd like to go back on it whenever it's safe. I'm

emailing my surgeon for advice, but I'd like to hear what others in

the group have been told.

Also, for the 52-year-old new to the group, I was 53 when I had

my resurfacing, and I'm much better than I was pre-op, although I

still have some physiotherapy every couple of weeks, and have to do

exercises daily. And I was not an athlete before, but I can now walk

up hilly streets and trails that I couldn't even think about tackling

for the past few years. Since the average woman in developed countries

now lives to around 80, we'd probably outlast a THR for sure, so my

advice is to have a resurfacing instead if you can find an OS who

thinks you are a candidate; and if you get turned down a few times,

don't give up until you've sent your X-rays to Dr. de Smet, or Mr.

Treacy or Mr. McMinn. They have enough experience to handle the

difficult cases.

Thanks to all who replied to this question. I recently received an

email from Pam at Dr.McMinn's office, to say I could restart my

calcium pills. I was about 6 months post-op at that time, but I gather

that sooner would have been all right as well.

I've been off the board for awhile, due to a three-week trip to

France and Spain. Walked all over the place, sometimes 8 hours per

day, with no limp... Couldn't have done that a year ago.
