Guest guest
I am in a very similar situation. I am scheduled for resurface in May. I am a former athlete, 40 years old and busy raising two very active little boys. I am currently able to ski, skate, mountain bike and run occasionally with the normal associated pain. I am also concerned about opening the flood gates for future procedures. My right hip is bone on bone and, according to my doctor, the window is very narrow to have this procedure done. I may be able to buy a year on the left hip. I am no stranger to pain as I had several recontructive knee operations during my career. My biggest issue now is very limited range of motion. Someone pointed out to me that the prospect of this condition getting better is unrealistic and it will get dramatically worse with time. If I was in the condition that many of those who post are in it would make my decision to have this done all that much easier. I wish you the best with your outcome. This group has provided me with the knowledge and courage to take action, and for that I am grateful. Aleks > Hi Guys, > I'm two weeks away from my resurfacing, & trying to keep a good > attitude. Guest guest
It's ok to have some anxiety. I had it too! I also had very little pain for almost 2 months prior to my surgery, but I was not going to be fooled by " the eye of the storm " . I'm now over a year post-op and very happy with the results. Good luck and keep us posted. C+ 3/13/03 Dr. Mont
Guest guest
You and I are similar. I am a 45-year old vascular surgeon still very active, professionally and personally. I would like to avoid surgery on my hip if possible (I can't), and I certainly would like to avoid a second future hip surgery (not likely at my age and activitie). Therefore I believe the long-term goal is find the best combination of 2-3 procedures to treat my hip disease. I believe that hip resurfacing (HRP) performed initially is the best option. Long-term results beyond 10 years do not exist as of yet. However, despite the lack of good long-term data I believe HRP will provide me with optimal pain relief, the best anatomically correct repair, greatest range of motion, greatest chance to resume any and/or all athletic activities (if I so choose to do so), and the ideal way to ensure that any future secondary or tertiary revision hip surgery is made as simple and straightforward as possible. If I need multiple surgeries I would rather hope that my hip surgery history over the next 30-40 years look like this: Primary HRP followed by a primary THR followed by a secondary revision THR (if necessary). I believe that this is a much less riskier surgical plan as compared to the more traditional surgical approach of: Primary THR followed by secondary revision THR followed by tertiary revision THR. I do not know if this helps you at all but I know for myself that the next 5-15 years are very important to me and I want to be as " actively normal " as I can with little or no physical or pain restrictions. I believe that HRP is the best method to accomplish this goal. Finally, it has been my experience in surgery that the patient who can maintain a positive mindset before, during, and after surgey will discovery that his/her recovery will be healthier, better tolerated, and to some extent, less painful and shorter in perceived duration. Good-luck to you. Keep me updated as you move along in your recovery. Regards, Mark r > > Hi Guys, > > I'm two weeks away from my resurfacing, & trying to keep a > good > > attitude. Guest guest
Hello and Mark, Seems we are all in the same boat and I could not agree more with lifestyle choices. I am a Firefighter/Paramedic and love to compete in Ironman Triathlons as well as Snowboard and other like activties. I am only 45yrs old and would like to be able to continue in these activities as well as my career. It's to bad the insurance companies don't see it the same way. Dealing with them has been a giant nightmare and I refuse to go any further dealing with people who don't care or understand. My surgery is scheduled with Dr.DeSmet at the end of the month and can't wait to have my life bag. Good luck with your surgeries and quality of life changes. Guest guest
Mattosma: Thanks for the posting. Its because of you and many others on this site, that those of us at the beginning of this process, can get through the misinformation and frustration, in our attempts to be able to re enter life. Thanks Phil Devon UK Re: two weeks away Phil, Good luck to you and keep me posted. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
