Dear list members,

I am an addiction psychiatrist who has recently switched from clinical work to

prevention and research;,mostly with Latinos and especially with farmworkers.

I am searching for better materials for a substance use prevention program I run

in Southeast Michigan and noticed Neander had a similar question in June

(but can't figure out how to pull addresses from old messages- sorry for

repeating old questions!). or others, could you please write back to me as

to what you obtained from Mexico with the list's help? I am especially

interested in video recommendations. I have scoured the US for years and can't

find anything that fits very well re: culture, literacy, context and language.

Mil gracias!

Lucila

P.S. I really enjoyed the archived messages about alcohol and HIV issues!

Lucila-sorry for being slow in getting back to you. don't remember te

messages from june and so i hope that you can get that info from someone

with a better memory.I believe that the folks at harvest house in north

carolina and albert pacheco in washington state would be able to give you a

great fun down on materials that they use. Also some of the best work out

of mexico city included a young research named maria de jesus diaz perez.

she is currently working with the plan de salud del valle health center in

ft. lupton colorado. if any of these contacts are of interest to you, i can

get you phone numbers or email addresses. perhaps you have already contacted

these folks so i don't want to waste your time if you have. good luck to

you and keep the list posted on your work. thanks. dgarcia

Hello o,

For data and analyses of farmworker poisonings in California

(1991-1996) please see the report, " Fields of Poison: California

farmworkers and pesticides. "

Our home page is http://www.panna.org/ , the report text can be

found at: http://www.panna.org/resources/labor.html

We are currently in the process of preparing an updated report

(1997-1999).

o,

The Washington Pesticide Incident Reporting and Tracking Review Panel (PIRT) issues an annual report that contains some of this information (you would need to interpret it, however to precisely get farmworkers). A contact for this would be: Lynden Baum, at the Washington Department of Health: Lynden.Baum@...

Please remember though that many people feel reported pesticide-related incidents may only be a small proportion of the number of actual such incidents due to difficulty in diagnosis, lack of recognition by health care providers, fear of reporting on the part of the farmworker, no requirement to report such incidents in most states (that is not true of Washington) and many other reasons.

Lucila,

A good resource for addiction prevention and treatment is FIPADIC, an NGO in

Apizaco, Tlaxcala, Mexico. I attended a very good workshop they did for

teens while studying there. The email is fipadic@...

and the website is http://apizaco.podernet.com.mx/fipadic

FYI there was a bilingual counselor there when I visited.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone for the useful information. I am still looking for

materials. As literacy level is an issue with the population in my area a video

or info on a PSA campaign that has evaluation data to support its effectiveness

would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Neander
