Guest guest
Hi everyone old and new, I was wondering whether anyone knows what effects, if any, taking antibiotics might have on thyroid (FT4, FT3, TSH) levels, as well as TPO and TSI antibodies as measured by lab work? I was planning to get bloodwork on May 9th but will probably be taking Cipro (an antibiotic) that week due to dental surgery. Since i get lab tests so rarely these days, I would hate to be doing something that might contaminate the results. Thanks so much for your help. Zoey Hey Terry: Congrats on your tapazole reductions. You've come a long way! How are you feeling? My final ATD doses were something like 1.25mgs every day for about a month and then 1.25 evry other day and then every three days, etc.
Guest guest
Hi Zoey, I'm pretty sure there were some posts not too long ago about antibiotics and thyroid, from Elaine...wish I had a better memory. Perhaps an archive search will turn it up. Cipro seems like a pretty intense thing to take for dental surgery, can't they do with anything else? I've never heard good things about that one, people have such a strong reaction. I don't know your circumstances, but totally understand the desire to minimize bad effects of dental surgery. The whole process frightens me, there is such a direct connection through the system from teeth. Dental work always sets my body awry. But I do wonder if there's a more natural way...I'll ask Bart what he thinks if you want. As for me, I seem to bounce around day to day in how I feel, but I've had a cold and the stress level has been high due to a very difficult work situation right now, I may be losing my kitchen (and therefore, my livelihood), although things are looking better perhaps in that department. Anyway, one day I feel hypo, then hyper the next. All I do is monitor my heart rate and BP, both have been just fine--and watch for symptoms of hyper or hypo, there have been none so far except tiredness, but I have been sick so who knows on that! I still don't feel stabilized enough to do labs, so I keep waiting and chipping away at the pills, and watching myself. At some point I'm going to use that lab slip with the TSI and FT3 on it, and then I'll know. I just don't want to blow it by using it too soon. I want to feel no symptoms for a while, first. Guest guest
Zoey, If antibiotics had any affect on the antibodies, we would take them and all be healed. But... the thing I can tell you, is a couple of times I had infections, one in particular was bad... accessed tooth left too long... and both times my FT4 was low. My thoughts are that my body was using all resources to fight the infection. Because the FT4 dropped as the tooth got worse, and as soon as I had it worked on and did antibiotics, my slight fever and flu feeling went away, and the FT4 shot right back to where it should have been. The literature says ' non thyroidal illness' lowers thyroid hormone levels. This is normally thought of as something that is serious, but perhaps it is simply a matter of degree. So if you were to have any infection at all, it seems reasonable to me, to wait a bit on labs, since we them spend so many weeks thinking we are hyper/ hypo and treat ourselves accordingly. Good way to rock a boat that does not need to be rocked. :-) -Pam L - 3 1/2 years Graves', TED, and PTU. Remission due to SLOW reduction of PTU (despite an incompetent endo ! ), improved lifestyle, excellent nutrition, herbs, and looking at the big picture. Pills alone only help the symptoms. We must help our bodies to heal.
Guest guest
Hi Zoey, Good to hear from you, and hope all is well in CA. The Cipro shouldn't affect your test results. Dental surgery can, though, especially if you're laid up for a while so it's best to have your labs done before the procedure. Take care, elaine

Guest guest
Thank you all. So good to hear from you. I decided to do my bloodwork this Thursday - the day before my surgery so as to be on the safe side. As antibiotics go, Cipro is the only one I've been able to handle. I took it for a 2 inch puncture wound in Africa and had no side effects. The dental work is a combination extraction of an impacted wisdom and the next tooth that it damaged and an implant. Because the tooth is so far back and my mouth is so small, antibiotics, in this case, seem the best way to go. The area is too hard to keep clean. For other things like colds and infections (which fortunately I don't get), I wouldn't touch them. I hope everyone is doing well. I'm still waiting for a California book tour, Elaine. Hugs and best wishes, Zoey Re: Antibiotics and lab results: Elaine-others Hi Zoey, Good to hear from you, and hope all is well in CA. The Cipro shouldn't affect your test results.
