Guest guest
PR01: 464 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Steve Maviglio 916 /445-4571 October 4, 2001 GOVERNOR DAVIS ANNOUNCES $5 MILLION IN GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR CESAR CHAVEZ DAY SACRAMENTO - Governor Gray today announced that funding for $5 million in grants for Cesar Chavez Day service events is available. " Last year, I was proud to sign legislation that established the Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning, in honor of Cesar Chavez, who fought tirelessly for social change, " Governor said. " During last year's celebration, more than 320,000 students participated in more than 300 service events throughout the state. I am hoping for more events this year that promote service and volunteerism. Service should be a way of life - not just an occasional act of charity. " The legislation provided $5 million in grants for conservation corps and other community-based organizations to create service events involving California's K-12 students. The grant program is administered through the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism (GO SERV). Any eligible organizations interested in developing and implementing meaningful service activities that will engage K-12 students should submit proposals to GO SERV by no later than 5:00 p.m., November 16, 2001. This year's official Cesar Chavez Day will be held on April 1, 2002. For more information, visit GO SERV's Web site at www.chavezday.ca.gov or call (916) 323-7646. # # #
