Guest guest
Hi, just wanted to share some of my prenant too soon experiences from the past week. (I'm, 4.5 mo post op RNY & 7.5 wks pregnant) 1. Spina bifida. There is a study in South America that shows there is a 10% chance of babies having a form of Spina BIfida when a WLS mom conceives too soon. No U.S. studies have been done to compare with this but this S. America study is what they have to go on. ((It is worth noting that my genetic councelor added that babies of women in other countries may have a higher risk for S.B. anyway due to nutrition issues - although I don't know if that would be the case of these WLS moms.)) 2. Folic Acid.. I had to see a genecic councelor and in the course of him setting me up for a level 2 ultrasound at 12 wks to look for spina bifida issues, we taked to a pernatologist. (sp?) And he said gastric bypass women need roughly 4 MG of folic acid per day. Most people take 400 MCG which is much different. 4 MG is like 4,000 MCG (if I remember the math correctly) In planning to get pregnant we should take the 4 MG per day & the best way to get that kind of a dose is by presciption. Otherwise you'd have to take a bottle (exageration) of over the counter stuff per day.
