Guest guest
I don't think there is anything. Guest guest
M, From what I have learned when I was in College and plus just personal research there has not been anything that doctors have come up with to prevent Downs as it is a chromosome problem. For years it was though that Downs most of the time was caused by the age of the woman's egg, since a woman has all the eggs she will get from the time of birth, the older eggs have a higher chance of having problems. They have recently discovered that at times it can be the man that is responsible for a Downs baby, with a break down of 75% of the time related to age of the egg and therefore coming from the mother, and 25% of the time from a problem with the sperm. Doctors though that since men are constantly creating new sperm they always thought that the sperm were ok and if they weren't they never made it to fertilize an egg, but they now know that it isn't true, defective sperm can sometimes succeed in fertilizing an egg. I have not heard of doctors having a way of preventing Downs, nor anything that a woman can take to prevent it, like taking folic acid to help prevent neural tube defects. Of course I'm not a medical person, but I hope this helps answer some of your questions. Axelrod Downs Question I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but is there anything you can do to avoid having a baby with downs? I mean, I know I am taking folic acid to avoid something, is there anything that you can do to help prevent it? Not being pregnant still leaves me with a lack on knowledge, but I am trying to learn. And since I dont go back to see my ob until I GET pregnant, you guys are it! angela m
