Guest guest
I weighed 157 at my first appointment and was 11 weeks along. My OB couldn't pick up a heartbeat using the doppler (said its difficult to hear before 12-13 weeks) so just to put my mind at ease he took me into a different room and gave me a quickie ultrasound so we could look at the heartbeat. Hope you're able to hear the little flutter. Its such a sweet sound. Toi
Guest guest
I just had my 12 week appointment, and they did all that you are talking about at that appointment. Although I weigh less than you do now, the midwife couldn't hear the heartbeat at first, because I have a lot of loose skin. She did after a couple of tries, though. If she couldn't hear it at all, she was going to send me to the OB office for a quick ultrasound, in which case they would be able to see the heartbeat, which is a flicker in the baby's chest. I had an appointment at 10 weeks, and she couldn't hear the heartbeat at all, but in her opinion, it was too soon. So I just had to wait. As far as abdominal measurements, she just felt my stomach, and felt uterine size while doing the internal exam. She said she could tell that the size of the uterus was about the size of a grapefruit, and that it was good. No measuring tape this time, as I don't really show yet, just a thick waist. When I had my first child at over 300 lbs, they never bothered with the abdominal measurements, because I didn't start out with a flat stomach, so it wouldn't be accurate, and they got my son's first heartbeat by ultrasound because I was much too heavy for them to hear it with just doppler. My abdominal measurements were only taken at the very end, when I definitely had a tight stomach, at 42 weeks along. But I didn't show otherwise until I was about 7 months, because I lost weight until then, and my own fat stomach hid the baby. I didn't even really feel the baby unless I tried to lay on my tummy, and then I felt the pressure of the womb. Hope this helps. in Western MA April 10, 2002 Open RNY 323-155, now weight 162 at 12 weeks pregnant mother to Caleb, 11/27/00, wife to Ray, 9/28/
