Guest guest
Hi there Melody, Glucose Tolerance Testing is to check to see if you have a type of diabetes, or high blood sugar, that only pregnant women get. The word gestational means pregnant. If a woman gets high blood sugar when pregnant, but she never had high blood sugar before, its then called gestational diabetes. Its one of the top health concerns related to pregnancy. Most of the time, gestational diabetes goes away after the baby is born. The changes in your body that cause gestational diabetes normally occur only when you are pregnant. After the baby is born, your body goes back to normal and the condition goes away. Women diagnosed with gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing diabetes mellitus in the future. If they require insulin for their pregnancy, there is a 50% risk of diabetes within 5 years. If dietary control has been sufficient, a 60% risk of developing diabetes mellitus within 10-15 years still persists. The web links are below for you if you like. Hope this helps a little, ita. http://www.medstudents.com.br/ginob/ginob4.htm http://www.nichd.nih.gov/publications/pubs/gest_diabetes.htm
