My test came back OK and my son has numerous medical problems. Tests are helpful to screen for things but don't read too much into it. Guest guest Posted November 4, 2004 Report Share Posted November 4, 2004 I didn't have abnormal AFP's, but I wanted to offer some info about these tests. First, is this the triple or quad screen? I ask because this makes a difference in the false positive rate. The " AFP " is historically the triple screen but some are calling the quad screen an AFP now too. The triple screen has a very high false positive rate. It's like 75% false positive. MOST people who have a positive screen will not find any problems. Depending on what you're concerned about, you can have a level II or III ultrasound and have them look for indicators on that for things like downs (nuchal fold) and spinabifida. I you're concerned about m/c with amnio, this is a good choice to start with and if there is something suspect there you can then do the amnio to confirm it. The Quad screen has a lower false positive rate, but it's still there. I think it's more in the range of 25-30% (don't quote me though - this info is available on line if you want hard facts). Same as with the other, if you don't want to jump into amnio (there's a 1% risk of m/c IIRC) right yet have a level II or III u/s first. Ask your care provider which screening you had and check out the info online about that before you worry too much. Really, the false positive rate is so high with these that many women don't even do them at all because they don't want to have to worry over nothing. I don't think it can detect CF anyway - apparently it doesn't even show up till 17+w on u/s. We had the u/s at 17w5d with Darbi and no one said anything about her feet. With Jordan we had two ultrasounds and they never saw her feet were clubbed, so we will just have to wait and see. Atleast this time around we will know what to do. Guest guest Posted November 4, 2004 Report Share Posted November 4, 2004 My AFP test came back normal for and she had unilateral CF (diagnosed at birth, missed during multiple ultrasounds). After I turned 36 every physician, obs. and/or midwife I have seen has advised me that an AFP test is not reliable due to this. (1986-2004, 4 preganancies, 6 different care-givers and 3 different locations so must be true!) Because of my age (48 years) we had IN-DEPTH ultrasounds twice with . Felt like we knew him from the inside out! Nobody caught his foot...but we didn't do AFP because we were told it would be basically meaningless at my age. My 5 mo. ultrasound showed the clubfeet. I have heard that there is a high incidence of the 'false positives' with that test.
