Guest guest
LOLOL... I love this group!! How about a little teenage-boy-team-spirit? We could pick a mascot...hmmm, the possibilities. We'll have a chant & everything... Ponsetti Rules! We want a cast-er Not a...uhh...help??? DBB questions I just re-read the " Tips & Tricks " thing. Even though it feels like Ava's been wearing them forever it's only been 8 days, so I figured I could use the brush-up! Anyway, it leads me to 2 questions... 1) Ava has no problem keeping her heels down & the shoes on. So sometimes I don't tighten them REALLY hard. Is that okay? I didn't think it was a problem as long as her heels aren't slipping. And... 2) This has been discussed in another post, but now I'm really wondering. Is it supposed to be the width of the shoulders is the length of the bar as measured from heel to heel? That seems really strange, because on a 6 " bar, even with one set at 45 degrees, there's still only about 3 " between the heels. And no baby, no matter how small has a 3 " shoulder span! (Well, maybe some premies, but you know what I mean) It also seems like that would be less comfortable...DH & I were practicing (haha) & our feet set at angles with our HEELS at shoulder width was very uncomfortable. Feet set at angles with the CENTER of them at shoulder width was much more comfortable. Thats how Ava's are set, and she's been quite happy. And just as a side note, has anyone noticed that nosurgery4clubfoot has over 600 members, while the regular Club Foot group only has about 130? (Of which one is me, and I haven't been back since the day I joined, and then found this group, so it's really like 1 less!!) How about a little teenage-boy-team-spirit? Guest guest
finally is out of casts and we got his DBB yesterday. I read through the tips document, thank you whoever put that together. I have some questions about helping him learn to get around. He can crawl dragging the bar behind him, but he can't get from sitting to crawling or from crawling to sitting. What is the easiest way for him to do that and how can I help him learn? Thanks, and 11/10/03 bilateral clubfeet
Guest guest
I have been watching Christian do just that lately and it appears to me that when he is crawling and decides to sit up, he either swings the DBB around in a way words couldn't even explain or he just drops down, flips over and literally does a sit-up. I didn't teach him any of that and I don't know if you can teach it to them but it couldn't hurt to try. Maybe if you just put your hands out for him to grab and pull himself up on. I am sure someone else will have a better idea of how to help him. Guest guest
learned to flip his legs right over and sit up. I actually didn't work with him on that. he figured it out all on his own. I had no idea how to do it either. Thank you Lord for making these kids so resilient and able to figure out anything! the shoes were actually a blessing to help him figure out the correct way to sit up rather than doing the splits to go from lying down to sitting up. he even figure out how to go up stairs in the shoes. yay, that was fun! hehe! Have fun watching your son figure stuff out. Help him push himself up with one hand into sitting and the let him figure it out! He'll get it, he will surprise you! They are such little miracles. jason atyp bl cf 10-09-03 > > finally is out of casts and we got his DBB yesterday. Guest guest
I forgot to start with...CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! Don't throw the shoes across the room too many times and good luck!! I found the best way to put them on in beginning was pinning down, buckling them as tight as I could, set him down and then running for the bottle of baileys! Worked like a charm every time! LOL Remember to put one of those infant seat strap things on the bar to prevent too many black and blue knees and watch out for your eyes, one gal on here found the shoes pack a mean punch! Good luck and have fun in this new stage! One stage down... > > finally is out of casts and we got his DBB yesterday. Guest guest
, Hopefully won't get too frustrated trying to figure this all out. I don't remember how Jonah figured it out, but figure it out he did. To go from sitting to crawling he puts one arm on the floor then pivots his bar and body around one of his feet, landing on hands and knees. To go from crawling to sitting he sort of does the reverse--it's hard to describe--flipping his bar over first then the rest of his body. Pretty impressive, really. You could try helping him do this a couple of times, see if he gets the hang of it. How is the rest of this going? Does he seem to be adjusting well? How do his feet look? They are fully corrected and very loose since he had the tenotomy. They almost seem too loose, but then I'm used to them being so tight. He's adjusted very well. He screamed the entire time I was putting the shoes on, but his feet were very sensitive after having been in casts for 10 weeks. Once they were on, he was fine and has been fine. I checked his feet this morning for sore spots and didn't see any. He woke up a few times in the night, but once I helped him get on his tummy he went back to sleep. He's a little frustrated by not knowing how to get around, but already he's learning. I noticed a rash in the creases behind his knees tonight, probably that tender skin from being in casts. I put some A&D ointment on it and will check them in the morning. Dr. Ponseti told me I may have trouble keeping his feet in the shoes since they're so short. The orthotist cut holes in the heels so I could see if his heels are down, but it's still hard for me to tell. I've pulled the buckles as tight as they'll go without cutting off the circulation, but I'm worried about relapsing. We go back in a month, so I'll know then whether he's relapsing or not. and 11/10/03 bilateral clubfeet Our non-Ponseti doctor had him in similar shoes for about a month, but no bar and he relapsed. But that doctor was never able to correct his feet, so I'm not sure he even relapsed, more like things just stayed the same.

I'm sure he'll figure out how to maneuver in those shoes, it didn't take him long in the casts and he was amazing fast when he was crawling in them. It is amazing how easily babies get used to things like casts and bars. Our kids are only a month apart in age. That's neat. and 11/10/03 bilateral clubfeet

LOL He was actually hitting my leg with the bar when I was trying to get his shoes on. He's already learned it's a good weapon. Thanks for the congratulations. I'm actually not finding the shoes that difficult because he's worn them before when his feet weren't corrected. I learned how to get them on correctly and to ignore his cries because once they're on he's fine. The one thing I do have trouble with is telling whether his heel is down correctly in them. and 11/10/03 bilateral clubfeet

Especially when his shoes and socks are off and his feet look normal. It's the first time I've ever seen his feet look normal. and 11/10/03 bilateral clubfeet dbb 23/
