,

I have heard of children having one or two " funky " toenails from

casting, but never *all* of the toenails. I think Joy's daughter,

Rose, also dealt with a very persistant fungal infection for a while.

Are *all* of his toenails unusual? Are you sure it's from casting

and not genetic (my kids have funny toenails inherited from their

father! =) )? I know it takes a very long time for a damaged nail to

grow out. As long as the nail beds weren't damaged, I think the

nails will be alright eventually.

Have you posted any photos of his toenails?

Sorry I can't be of any significant help!

Hi , thanks for your reply.

Not having his feet to hand (he's in bed) I think roughly 7 of them

are distorted. It is DEFINITELY from the casting as they were

perfect when he was born. One toe in fact ended up being cast under

the other after he had his tenotomy. Fortunately our consultant

wanted to take a look half way through the 3 week period Dr Ponseti

recommends for the cast to stay on, otherwise it would have been

significantly worse than it is.

Hi

MY son has strange toe nails too. They were fine at birth but they started

to grow sideways and then they went upwards so the end of the nail was

growing towards the toe. I questioned everyone about this as I was very

concerned he would get ingrowing nails as sometimes they could look sore on

the edge that was growing into his toe, and no-one had any idea and kept

saying they had never seen anything like it. Also they kept saying that it

was just the way he was which I don't believe as we took lots of pictures of

his feet at birth and the nails were flat. None of his toes seemed cramped

in the casts, so don't really know when it started. I feel it is more from

wearing the shoes.

Anyway he is now 17 months and I have to say that although none of them are

dead flat but they are definately improving which the Specialist here in

Bath said would probably happen. You couldn't see his small toe nail but you

can now. I think when they start walking and gripping with the toes this

seems to bring them back down.
