Hi Lori,

I would question your OB as to why this is so important in your case. I

agree with you that many women (even without WLS) lose weight during the first

trimester. I lost 18 lbs during the first trimester and I was 3 years out

from my WLS. I am currently at 26 weeks and I have not gained any weight. I

had an ultrasound a couple of weeks ago and the baby is EXACTLY where he should

be as far as weight and size goes. Just wanted to reassure you a little. I

would just talk to your OB and make sure that he/she has a good understanding

of what's going on with your body. Good luck!

Lori,

Your not that far out from your WLS, how far from goal were you before you found

out that you were pregnant? When I was in my first trimester I ended up losing

25lbs, maybe more. My OB, though I was his first WLS patient, said he wasn't

going to worry unless this kept up in the second trimester. Luckily the

" morning sickness " was gone as soon as my second trimester started and now that

I'm 33 weeks I have gained around 20lbs with the pregnancy. I would absolutely

refuse to drink that sugary protein drink if I were you since it makes you feel

sick. Does this nutritionist know anything about WLS patients? When I was

feeling bad I made sure I drank enough and took my prenatals and when I could

eat I made sure I ate healthy stuff. You need to keep in mind that the baby

during the first trimester doesn't need much because it is so small, and it will

make sure it gets what it needs, it will be you who suffers. Hopefully your

" morning sickness " will be over soon, in the mean time I wouldn't worry too

much, I'm sure you baby is getting everything he/she needs. :)

losing weight

I need advice. I am 10 weeks pregnant and 9 months post-op. Since finding

out I am pregnant, I have lost 15 pounds. I eat a lot-- so much more than I

have since surgery; and more often; but I keep losing weight. I have lost 7 1/2

pounds in 2 weeks. My nutritionist is wanting to put me on some protein drinks

to help me gain weight. The Scandishake that she gave me is loaded with sugar.

I cannot drink that! She knows that it will make me dump, which is why she said

to drink 1/2 at a time. I don't see the point in drinking something that will

make me throw up and feel so bad that I can't eat anything else. My thing right

now is that I am still in my 1st trimester; and it is not uncommon for any woman

to lose weight during this time due to morning sickness, whether she has had wls

or not. Why is this such a big deal right now? I could understand it better if

I were further along, or not eating healthily. If anyone has any advice on how

I can stop losing weight right now, I

would really appreciate it. I go back Friday and would like to be armed with

info when I meet her and my OB again.

Thanks!

Lori

Lori,

It sounds like you are doing everything right. Don't worry that you

are losing weight. Just make sure you are getting 80 - 100 grams of

protein a day, eat every few hours if you have to and get in the

vitamins. That's all you can do. I don't see a point to the shakes

and if they have concerns about the baby's growth, then they should

do frequent ultrasounds to check the growth. My midwives were

shocked at the amount of weight I've lost during this pregnancy, but

I said, " that's why I had the surgery, it's not something I can help

and I didn't plan this pregnancy, all I can do it what I'm doing

already, eating every 3 hours and getting in close to 100 grams of

protein a day " . My baby is measuring big, the ultrasound tech

actually asked if my dates could be off by two weeks. That's

entirely possible since I don't have a clue what was going on with

my cycles after surgery.

All I can say is keep up the good work, you're doing just fine.

Jenn - Mom to 7 1/2, Caroline 4 and " baby girl " due April 30th

or May 14th 2004, who knows, she'll come when she done.
